In this continuity, Norman's got a bit of a nasty temper and is already mad at Ruby for running away to be a Coordinator. When he finally finds the poor kid...

On topic, I agree that Norman's stellar parenting and Ruby's, ah, "problem" with the Salamance will almost certainly be censored, unless VIZ has really loosened up since the whole GLARE thing. I mean, if one instance of parental violence can't make it through the censors, then an entire scene's worth...? (When they get to that arc, they'll probably also censor Emerald's tendency to pee on people off of buildings too, haha.) Still, so excited!

Well, outside parental abuse, DPA showed worse things (and Hareta was shown peeing on Mitsumi's bag which she found out in their battle in Vol 4 so Emerald might still do it).

Maybe they have a more lienent editor this time around?

I just edited the GLARE scene back to the original page in my copy

And I really, really love most of this arc. I felt the regis were underutilized at the end, the balance badge battle scene was short, but otherwise I love how they took secondary characters like the swimmer, Gabby & Ty, and others to help flesh out the world.

How did you accomplish this? Markers?

Although I'm excited about Viz releasing the RS arc, it's not really one of my favorite arcs. It mostly stems from my dislike of the main characters, though I do agree that the minor characters were fleshed out in a enjoyable way. I like the secondary characters better than the primary characters, honestly...

But I may have different opinions if I re-read the arc, since it's been YEARS since I've read it.

Really? I've never read DPA, but that's interesting... it does point to an increasing lenience in VIZ's censoring. I hope so--believe me, I don't want anything to be censored. (Of course, they could also have different standards for DPA than they do for PS, which is more mainstream and (from what I've heard) less risqué to begin with.)

Yeah same here, RS was one of my least favorite chapters (if not THE least favorite chapter) but my reason is because I've grown too attached to the original main characters and since none of them appear in this chapter, reading through eight volumes just so I could understand the Emerald chapter was torture for me. But that was when I was twelve, when Viz releases the RS volumes hopefully I can enjoy them this time. :3

Another problem I had with the RS arc was the Celebi ex Machina ending. As an avid comic book fan, the whole bringing characters back to life thing shouldn't faze me, but in this situation, it bothered me. I know it's a children's manga (as much as people hate to admit it), but it still made me unhappy.

And I agree, I hope I enjoy it this time too. What I'm REALLY holding out for is my beloved FR/LG arc.

True. If it were me, I would've had those who died really be severely injured but with hope of recovering. If I don't intend on killing them and resurrecting them in a DXM manner.

Did Ruby ever say how he got Celebi? In the slightest?

All he said was that he met Celebi in Johto, but that's all.

Not as far as I know. He just pulls it out of his ***.

Oh god, editing things out... I wouldn't have such a problem if they just lessened the violence, but god, the last two times "YOU TRICKED ME!" and "GLARE" were just... so impossible to make sense of if you didn't know they were censored. it's ridiculous.

If DPA indicates anything, it's mostly due to difference in the editors (for the US version). Hopefully, they decide to be a wee bit more lenient. And by "wee" I mean a "lot." They may as well since they're no dancing around it.

And I still think that "Glare" should've been Crys's Mom yelling at her daughter to get herself together. You could say that Crys and her Pokemon cringed from how loud she was.

Some of the stuff they would have to censor would be important to the plot, so that's just another reason not to... Viz doesn't care too much about the plot though.

The biggest thing I worry about is the ACTUAL child abuse going on. I wonder if they'll just cut it out.

I dunno but either way, I can assure you this: when volume 15 comes out, we WILL be surprised.

It'll be the biggest glare fest ever XD. I to am looking forward to Ruby and Norman. They wouldn't even let Crystal get properly slapped in Vizkids. How is Ruby and Norman going to pass? This is even bigger then the infamous Gold and Blue butt pat. I still can't get over that it made it into Vizkids version XD
Pokemon Left version and Pokemon Right version. They are coming soon.

What are those scenes about? In which chapters and volumes do they appear? Is the "YOU TRICKED ME!" scene a major and bad edit?

The "You Tricked Me" is a reference, I believe, to the not so well done edit of trying to alter it so Green (originally Blue) wasn't hiding Pokeballs in her shirt like fake breasts, and her Pokemon came out after she was attacked after flaunting said appearance. Might not be, but I think it is.

The Gold and Blue scene wasn't visually censored, but in the original version, he chose to slap her butt because he found her attractive, whereas in Viz's edited version, it was an "accident" (which isn't the worst edit, as we can just see it as him playing off being perverted as an accident so he wouldn't get in trouble).

But yeah, I found changing Crystal's Mother's slap into a glare to be ridiculous. Especially in light of Norman, who believes if at first you don't succeed, beat your child like a psychopath until he listen.

Also, Ruby gets his trademark scar from a particularly violent scene, there's no editing around it unless you start blacking out panels, and having him show his non-scarred body for no reason...

Ah, yes I know about that scene.

Looking at the actual panel, I don't think that it would be too hard. There's only one particular scene where Ruby has a lot of blood and the edit would be quite simple. Simply edit out the actual blood running from the wound while leaving a shaded bit coming out (bonus points if they keep with the shape of Ruby's scar). That and and the ripped hat would imply Ruby's injury and not detract from the story too much.

Looks like Vol. 15 will be getting a different cover, one that does not feature the first seven Dex holders. It's too bad, since Vol. 15's cover is so iconic, but I can understand why they'd want to feature only the characters that appear in this shorter (144 pages) volume.
