2012 Fanfiction Awards: NOMINATIONS

I'm sure Jax has said something like this a few times before too. =p

Indeed she has.

In fact, Jax is a grad student who has barely had any time whatsoever for the past six months to write her own fanfiction, and this is her ballot, which she is now posting to get people to stop complaining about how little time they have to read fics. :| For serious, guys, all you need to do is read the first couple of lines. If they don't catch your attention, move on to the next fic until you find something that does. There are quite a few nominations on this list I didn't even know about until this past week; I just happened across them via skimming their first paragraphs, putting their URLs down on a document, and coming back to them later for a closer look. At most, the whole process might've taken me a few hours. Sure, that means you'd have to spend a few hours, but keep in mind that you don't need to have your nominations in right now. :/

(And, well, you had weeks to go look through fics as well. Just sayin'.)

Sorry for the rant. It's just, seriously, guys, every time you complain that the limit's unfair, you propose shutting out a ton of fics that are absolutely fantastic, just because they're not written by your friends or because they were written by newbies. Come on, guys. Don't be like that.

Overall Fiction Awards
Best Pokémon Chaptered Fic
First nomination:
The Legend's End by Scaldiver. Easily one of my favorite review requests I've gotten. The suspense is palpable, and it's hard not to like the characters. Every one of them is very real, especially the Pokémon (something not a lot of people have been able to pull off in fanfic). The twist in one of the latest chapters (the one involving who the chosen one is) just emphasizes how new and different this is. It's a trainer fic that reads like something new and more intense.

Second nomination:
Requiem by Sidewinder.
However, this is my favorite fic of this year that I haven't commented on (but really should). Everything about this fic is amazing. Its premise is new and different, its characters are well-built, and it presents just the right amount of suspense to keep me reading. Not to mention if you're looking for well-written description, this is a good example of how to be awesome.

Best Pokémon One-Shot
First nomination:
Butterfree by Dragonfree. While make-the-player-feel-bad fics aren't entirely new, Dragonfree finds a way to make our decision to box that Butterfree we caught in Viridian Forest sound realistically terrible. The amount of emotion that the narrator maintains throughout this story makes this fic utterly heartbreaking.

Second nomination:
The Motionless Journey of Youngster Ian by Psychic. SPEAKING OF THINGS THAT MAKE YOU THINK ABOUT BEING A TERRIBLE PERSON. Psychic takes that trainer who constantly abuses your Pokégear number and gives you a reason not to want to punch them in the face pre-battle. She's successfully captured that feeling of hero-worship in this trainer while also developing him towards having an ounce of stability in his life. It really ends beautifully for that too.

Best Non-Pokémon Chaptered Fic
First nomination:
Deus X Machina by Deadly.Braviary. It's a robot uprising described in short, very powerful bursts. For that reason, from the very start, it catches your attention and holds it like a vice.

Second nomination:
Digimon: Antivaccine by RoseQuartz. Because hell yes, Digimon world-building.

Best Non-Pokémon One-Shot
Dragonborn by pepperedfox. Now, I will freely admit I know nothing about Skyrim. I still found this awesome. What makes it really is Arian herself. This is definitely her story, her struggle to be brave and live up to the greatness people apparently think she has, and all of that self-doubt careens into the final, incredibly powerful line. One can't help but root for Arian, and that's pretty amazing for a fic that gets its story across in so few words.

Other Fic Awards
Best Plot
Requiem by Sidewinder. Slacker and adoptive sister go off on a journey to bring a killer to justice? Chosen one trainer who's batshit insane and apparently working for a bunch of questionable gods? Yes please.

Most Original Overall
First nomination:
Stranger Than Fiction by Cutlerine. Do you like shenanigans with your meta humor? Cutlerine delivers with a rarity in the Pokémon fandom: a character breaking out of one fanfic to wreak havoc on others. Oh, sure, parodies, fourth-wall leaning, and dimension hopping is nothing new, but how many fics involve a character messing around with other fics that weren't even written by the same author? That's how brilliant this idea is. Also, it's illustrated. Because **** the rules.

Second nomination:
Clash by Silent--Protagonist. Silent, meanwhile, comes right the eff out of nowhere with a battle fic told in free verse poetry. Well-written free verse poetry at that.

Best Writing Style
First nomination:
Clash by Silent--Protagonist. No, seriously, it's really good free verse poetry.

Second nomination:
The Fall to Redemption by Cypher DS. It starts off with a rather powerful description of total darkness, and it just gets better from there. It's hard not to like Virgil's voice, and because of the narrator's… uniqueness, it's just a fascinating retelling of Emerald. It's rather silly that the author's forcing folks to read the fic elsewhere, but hey, what can you do?

Best Description
The Legendarian Chronicles by Chibi Pika. While I have to admit I haven't read everything in this fic, one thing I have noticed by reading the first couple of chapters and skimming the rest (orz) is that Chibi Pika knows how to do description without delving into the purple side of things. Everything in this fic is very vivid and, might I add, actually pretty beautiful.

Best Setting
Colony 9.0 by Treecko's Awesomeness. Because SPAAAAAAAACE. Sure, you get a bit of Earth too, but c'mon. Effing space guys. This fic is dealing with aliens.

Best Expansion of Canon
First nomination:
The Retelling of Pokémon Colosseum by bobandbill. If you liked Pokémon Colosseum… bobandbill apologizes for nothing.

Second nomination:
Weak by Ememew. Em gives us a rather beautiful look at Bianca's character, Iris's character, and the latter's reason for wanting so badly to take the former on as an apprentice. It culminates into adding a reason why Iris backed off in the end as well as a rather nice snapshot of her relationship with Drayden. Tl;dr? Em knows how to do characters right.

Best Character Development
Dorian Dvakna, Requiem by Sidewinder. I'm going to reach the max limit of nominations for this fic, aren't I? :. But for serious, Dorian's most of the reason why you should read this fic. He starts off as an aimless slacker (even a bit of a jerk), but oh my God does he become fantastically motivated and loyal to the people he cares most about after more than one encounter with death. It's amazing how much he develops after only a short period of time.

Best Characterization in a Short Story
Butterfree by Dragonfree. The characterization is practically the reason why it made my nomination list for best one-shot. It's really the narrator's personality that makes this whole story so powerful and emotional. If the narrator didn't have that perfect balance of passion or that very human way of speaking, this fic would've come off as overdramatic or trite.

Best Romantic Relationship
Cynthia/Dawn, Negative Edge by Diddy. Okay, so maybe I'm a sucker for Cynthia/Dawn to begin with (because it's pretty much one of the few Sinnoh-based romantic relationships I actually sort of like thanks to the whole mentor-mentee thing), but Diddy forces Dawn to go through Hell for it. And it shows, and it makes the ending all the more adorable.

Best Non-Romantic Relationship/Interaction
Dorian Dvakna and Shelton Street, Requiem by Sidewinder. Yes, again, but the characters are really the strongest point of this fic. Dorian and Sheridan see each other as brother and sister, and it shows. From their bickering to how much they support each other through disasters (or at least get ripped apart inside over how their counterparts react to them), it's easy to tell that their relationship goes well beyond the cliché "we're the male and female main character so why not." It's even well beyond the "we're in love" kind of relationship. It's powerful, and it's clear that these characters need each other because they're family.

Best Original Species
(Nada. Sorry!)

Most Suspenseful Fic
The Fall to Redemption by Cypher DS. When your fic starts off with a description of total darkness and includes dead characters, horrifying monsters, and all kinds of other fun eldritch abominations, you know you've got a rollercoaster of oh god what. Cypher pulls you in and plops you beside Virgil, who wakes up with only his name in a pretty terrifying version of Hoenn, in order to send you both on a journey into a deep, dark world in search of the answer to whatever the hell is going on. It's just that beautiful.

Most Heartbreaking Fic
Butterfree by Dragonfree. If you don't tear up as a result of this fic, you have no soul.

Pokémon Genre Awards
Best Trainer Fic
First nomination:
Survival Project by diamondpearl876. If you ever thought that a trainer fic would be more powerful if told from the perspective of the creatures trainers catch and order to battle… the answer is yes. Yes, it is. Also? This is an example of alternating POVs done well. Each new switch maintains the freshness of the story, but diamond understands that alternating POVs are meant to offer readers different perspectives on a story, rather than a redundant view of events or -- even worse -- just a means of reaching scenes that one character wasn't present for. In short, each point of view adds something significant to the plot, gives readers a wonderful view of each character, and presents a new means of telling a trainer fic.

Second nomination:
Mama's Boy by An-chan. Normally, I wouldn't nominate an abandoned fic like this, but I love the premise here. A trainer tries to have a perfectly ordinary start, only to have his mother decide to go along with him. Shenanigans ensue. It's beautiful.

Best Horror Fic
First nomination:
Pokémon Nightmare by Ocean Soul. Zombies. That is all.

Second nomination:
Invisible by diamondpearl876. Welp. I'm never owning a Ghost-type ever again, and this fic is why. Just oh my God, the narrator's creep factor is unbelievable. It also shies away from telling you straight-out what's going on, so your imagination has plenty of room to fill in some terrifying blanks.

Best Comedy Fic
The Retelling of Pokémon Colosseum by bobandbill. No, really, he is not sorry for what he did to Orre. (And if you want to see the world's best Quagsire, this is the fic to read.)

Best Fantasy/Sci-Fi Fic
TRINITY by Shrike Flamestar. Hard to argue against Pokémon IN SPACE WITH CYBERPUNK. The amount of thought Shrike puts into the details that create his world is utterly remarkable. Of course, he also gets points for creating an interesting story as well, but what really does it for me is the background, seriously.

Best Pokémon Mystery Dungeon Fic
First nomination:
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Silverveil by Koridojo_Blaziken. It's a beautifully written PMD fic that goes off the beaten path. As such, it reads so much more like a fantasy RPG than a PMD story, but that's okay because that means it focuses a lot on doing some amazing things with world-building.

Second nomination:
Til Death by Glover. If anything, read this for the character interactions and the absolutely fabulous theory concerning the relationship between Dream World and PMD. Which is to say, read it for everything.

Best Pokémon-Centric
First nomination:
The Itty Bitty Story of Ichabod by Silent--Protagonist. It's an adorable story about an Unown trying to be useful. Read that sentence again and let it sink in for a second.

Second nomination:
A Quick One While She's Away by jstinftw! Or, as I like to call it, "why you should never leave starters unattended ever." It's brief, but it's hilarious thanks to how the starters interact with each other. And by that, I mean destroy Professor Juniper's lab.

Best Canon Character-Centric
First nomination:
Weak by Ememew. Like I said earlier, it does an amazing job delving into the characters of Bianca and Iris and examines their in-game motivations thoroughly… while, might I add, bringing up more than one excellent point along the way.

Second nomination:
The Motionless Journey of Youngster Ian by Psychic. It's pretty difficult not to respect a fic that revolves around a game NPC who's mostly rematch fodder. Yet Psychic does an excellent job not only bringing that exact character to life but also making a reader feel for him.

Character Awards
Best Human Main Character
First nomination:
Mark, Bridging Dimensions by Cyn. One of the things that make this piece particularly entertaining is how casual and natural Mark is. You can tell he's a perfectly ordinary guy -- maybe even a bit of a slacker. That's why it gets a little hilarious (and by that I mean interesting) when Eevee pops up and throws him for a loop.

Second nomination:
Edward, The Legend's End by Scaldiver. He's weak (compared to his best friend), he's extremely creative and intelligent, and… he is caught up in legendary shenanigans purely due to their politics. It's just amazing to watch him and wait to see what he's going to do next, just because it's definitely clear he's nowhere near his element.

Best Non-Human Main Character
Rosco, Just A Dog by SerenadeSP. If you magically gave a dog the ability to speak, everything out of Rosco's mouth would be exactly the kind of thing it would say. …Which is why the story is a massive tearjerker, by the by.

Best Human Supporting Character
Nuria, The Legend's End by Scaldiver. At first, she seems like a self-centered ***** and the designated traveling companion… but then it turns out that's most of what makes her interesting. It's clear that she's got a lot to learn about Pokémon and about… pretty much everything else, and let's just say the twist that the plot throws at her? Makes her even better.

Best Non-Human Supporting Character
Bayleef, The Legend's End by Scaldiver. While the other Pokémon (besides Ralts) are perfectly happy serving Edward and Nuria, Bayleef most certainly isn't, and she alone provides a lot of the delicious, delicious conflict (as well as some interesting points) in the story.

Best Human Villain
Ethan, Requiem by Sidewinder. Only villain that managed to give me chills this year.

Best Non-Human Villain
First nomination:
The Machines, Deus X Machina by Deadly.Braviary. Oh God, all of them are chill-inducing. From the calm and calculating 4242 to S.H.A.W.'s chilling message to humanity, all of the Machines are positively terrifying as well as completely and beautifully alien.

Second nomination:
The ghost, Invisible by diamondpearl876. What makes this villain so incredible is that you have no idea what it's doing to the trainer. All you know is that it's something terrible, and all the while, it's gleefully describing every last detail.

Best Minor Character
Sherles, The Retelling of Pokémon Colosseum by bobandbill. Sherles is, hands-down, a breath of fresh air in the insanity and stupidity that seems to infest bobandbill's version of Orre. That may be why he seems to shine the brightest, but honestly, in my opinion, it's like a reverse comic relief. His timing is so brilliant and his parts so carefully written that it's just really hard not to like him because he seems like exactly what you want to see at any given time.

Funniest Character
Tom, The Retelling of Pokémon Colosseum by bobandbill. I applaud bobandbill's ability to write a drunk person narrating multiple chapters and have it still make some sort of sense. Also, Tom pops up in the worst ways possible, and it's always funny. Always.

“Umb…” (I’ll try…) Umbreon said uncertainly, reluctantly moving forward towards the Raikou who was now trying to remove Tom by bucking wildly.

“Bah, this ridiculousness might as well end quickly,” Nascour muttered to Es Cade. “Let’s send out all our Pokémon and end this quickly. Relax for now, Metagross!” he ordered.

“Yes, I think that will be in our best interest,” the mayor agreed, reaching for his Poké Balls. “I’ll send out five of mine and you send out your whole team!”

“Quickly, Umbreon!” Wes urged as the Raikou continued another loop and rushed past them.

“Tomsy wil buy yous…busies a dollars!” Tom added desperately.

“Umb!” (Fine!) Umbreon shouted. He then shouted loudly at the Raikou to grab its attention and then breathed deeply in before contorting his face into the most terrifying facial expression he could possibly muster.

Your blonde hair is so pretty, baby. It’s so bright, much too bright for a place like this. I rip it out. You hold on to your head, though your hair is the least of your worries. Your eyes goes next. You’re crashing into walls and bleeding everywhere, so lost when trying to escape. Oh, how wonderful it must be to run into the solid walls, a sure sign of the reality around you. I wish that I could figure out if I’m real or not. Does being real bother you, baby? I will find out. I make you beg and scream. For your mother. For your father. For your doctor. I make you beg and scream for the person that you had hoped to be at this point in your life. Does it bother you, baby, to know that you have been waiting for the best day of your life, all the while never considering that it may have already happened?

Scream your pokemon’s name, now, baby. They were waiting for that day with you, I’m sure. How disappointed they will be. Your pokemon’s move are powerless against me; they move right through my body. They are screaming, too. So loud. I want to hear you, not them. Does that bother you, baby? But I don’t mind, really. Teach them young, I say… I’ll teach them how to fear and cry while they’re still young. I wish that I could have joined your team, even if just for a short while. I could have observed them and learned so much. Likewise, I could have taught them many things.

I could have taught them how there are many ways to end a life, making such a sacred concept even more fragile than expected and desired.

There could be a simple snap of the neck. A disease whose only desire is to determine the day that you die. A pokémon attack gone awry and fired in all the wrong directions at all the wrong people. There could be the pull of a trigger and bullets that move faster than air itself, the same air that goes through so much trouble to place people in the gun's path, only to abandon them and watch them rot.

Let it not be forgotten that your current pokémon are causing the same kind of mayhem as I am, the same kind of carnage—and perhaps even more, though you will never know or dare to ask—as you yearn for their touch, their voices, any sign of propinquity.

Let it not be forgotten that blood—though you despise me for wanting it so much—is exactly what keeps both of you alive and breathing and together.

Let it not be forgotten that you are trying to live in a world that can offer you nothing but misery not meant for someone so young, a constant fight against insanity, and a skeptical view on what it means to be happy.

Let it not be forgotten that you made me this way.

Your face can’t form expressions like a human can, but I can see anyway in the slight tilt of your head, the twitching of your antennae, the slight slowing of your wing flaps, that it takes you a moment to recognize me. That wrenches at my heart more than anything; suddenly it occurs to me that your sense of time on the PC was muddled, that your first realization of how long it’s been is seeing me suddenly a teenager in place of the child that you knew. You hover there silently for a second, just staring at me with those unblinking red compound eyes; I don’t know if the accusation I see in them is real or just a projection of my own guilt. I try to imagine what must be going through your mind, what it might feel like to realize you’ve been in stasis for years, that everyone you knew has moved on without you – but I can’t even begin to comprehend it.

“I’m sorry, Butterfree,” I whisper; my voice is hoarse, and as I say it, as that pathetic apology escapes my lips as if it could ever make up for it, tears start pricking at the corners of my eyes. “I should have done this so long ago.”

It’s painful to speak, so I point the ball back at you and press the button, showing you that nothing happens, that I’ve deactivated the Pokéball. I throw it away; it bounces off the ground and comes to a rest by the roadside. You stare at it for a second, then look back at me.

“I kept telling myself I’d keep training you,” I say, fighting the urge to avert my eyes, the feeling that I don’t have any right to look at you anymore (I don’t, but this whole time I’ve been refusing to face you, and I can’t do that anymore). “And I never did. I released the others I couldn’t get the chance to continue training, so they could move on and have a life, but not you. I could never accept that you’d be better off without me. But you would.”

You look at me for a moment more, and then you flutter upwards, circling a few times in the sky for the first time in six years – six years that you never even knew. I try to swallow the lump in my throat, but I can’t; my mind is full of every time I avoided using you, every time I put off training you, every time I remembered you and realized I hadn’t thought about you for weeks. It’s an aching, suffocating feeling of opportunities lost, potential wasted and friendship neglected.

    Spoiler:- A battle between a legendary and the killer, plus some battle transformation magic. And death.:

Less than a second before entering the haze, an atom-splitting, savage impact sent the killer crashing toward the ocean below with more force than a meteor.

The murderer slowed as it approached the water, the friction of its power vaporising some of the liquid beneath. It did not experience pain, merely dissatisfaction at this unscheduled delay. It began to turn its gaze skyward but was blasted downward by the invisible force again, crashing deep below the ocean surface. It aligned itself and looked toward the surface venomously. This disruption was only giving its quarry more time to escape.

The murderer closed its eyes, sensing the world around it. Suddenly it felt a massive power speeding towards it, almost as fast as light. It opened its eyes, allowing power to surge through it, and an explosion of pure power enveloped the killer's frame, atomising the water into its base components. It could sense its foe flying away rapidly to avoid the deadly energy.

The killer rose to avoid the resurgence of the water, looking skyward to its aggressor. The murderer's eye's widened slightly in surprise. The killer's attacker saw this minute shift in facial expression and changed shape.

Orange skin started to crawl over its grey legs and body, causing them to grow thicker and leaving only a small, spiked, blue strip on each of its knees. The large, turquoise and orange oblong melted into its head, the flesh reworking itself like wax to form a three-pronged mask. As well as this each thin tentacle split at the tip, the two sides peeling down the tentacle until there were two formed, one turquoise and one orange on each side. The only space left unchanged was the dark purple orb in its chest, twinkling even in the lack of sunlight.

In the split second this transformation took place, the creature lunged toward the killer, wasting no time in executing blows which could have levelled a continent. But this time the killer was ready. With each attack the air shook and thunder rolled, but the killer stayed motionless, absorbing the onslaught without so much as a blink.

And then the killer struck back.

Best Established Writer
First nomination:
Dragonfree. Without a doubt, her one-shots are consistently extremely powerful and excellent, and her longer fics, albeit not updated that frequently, are definitely enjoyable to get into. Dragonfree knows how to write a good character for certain, and she's amazing at world-building and cooking up gripping prose.

Second nomination:
Cutlerine. Yes, I know my nominations sheet is rather sparse in terms of words about Cutlerine this year, but I give him props for creating some of the most fascinating premises and amusing characters on the forum. His fics always have an interesting balance of action and humor (even when he's not trying to be funny), and with the way he describes things, it's very easy to get into his worlds.

Best New Writer
First nomination:
Sidewinder. He posted his first shot at a fic, and it blew my mind. That is literally something that does not happen that frequently.

Second nomination:
Silent--Protagonist. One of the underdogs of the fanfic forum, Silent was here briefly for the summer, and every fic she did was amazing. She really knows how to get emotion across, even in a short amount of space, and her prose was so carefully worded with amazingly beautiful detail. She's definitely worth a look.

Most Dedicated Writer
Cutlerine. One of the bits of credit I have to give him is that Cutlerine posts high quality work on an incredibly reliable schedule. Even when the rest of us were being murdered by real life, Cutlerine was there to put up something new for us to read. Respect, man. Nothing but respect.

Most Improved Writer
Deadly.Braviary. Okay, yes, another author I didn't talk about that much here, but I have to say this anyway. Last year, I didn't really give Deadly much of a second glance. This year? Suddenly deep, interesting plots and well-written prose. Probably helps that Deus X Machina is a really well-written fic.

Reviewer Awards
Most Helpful Reviewer
First nomination:
Ememew. I give her props for so many reasons. She's very patient, even when a lot of us on the forum aren't, and she has a knack for not only knowing what to point out but also how to phrase things in a way that's easy to understand and tactful to the writer.

Second nomination:
Psychic. Similar reasons, actually! Psychic's always been patient and sweet to everyone she reviews, and she's not one to get frustrated that easily. When you see her drop by a story to say a few words, you know it's going to be a good conversation.

Most Dedicated Reviewer
Shadow Lucario. While I have to say I wish his reviews were more substantial (i.e., did more than point out grammatical errors, especially without explaining them), I give him props for reviewing practically every story with something that's a bit more than one-liner reviews.


Soooo... yeah. For those of you who are about to complain that you don't have time to read any other fics, just remember. A grad student with a day job managed to do this. *thumbs towards the above list*

That said, all I've got to say is I've got no problem with the rule. It gives more writers a chance in the competition. Otherwise, it'd be just people voting for their friends, and we'd only have a handful of people getting on the ballot. This way definitely makes things more interesting.

Originality Factor: 404 Error, by Missingno. Master

The concept of glitches in games has always been interesting to me, and although I haven't seen too many in Pokemon, I rarely see stories anywhere close to this. Therefore, 404 Error has my vote.

I thought his story "What now...?" was fun to read, and he seems to be pretty good for a new guy. I'd say he should be given a chance at being selected for the award.

Highest Esteemed Trainer Fic: Max's New Adventures, by RealRaymon.

Max is a rather interesting character, and I enjoy the idea of seeing him on a journey of his own as a Pokemon trainer. Therefore, this story gains my appreciation for this reason.

Best One-Shot Fic: Book of the Hermit, by JX Valentine

Now this is a bit interesting. I haven't seen too many stories like this, with the characters who designed the PC box system, and the mood felt a little strange in comparison to most of the fics I've seen.

Most Helpful Reviewer: JX Valentine

In addition to writing enjoyable stories, I read one of JX Valentine's reviews, and she seems to understand that there's more to constructive criticism that just giving generic labels to flaws and saying things like "THIS STORY SUCKS!"

The first review I saw from her was detailed, supportive, and actually explained how to improve the story, without arrogant and narcissistic undertones.

Most critics on the internet (on all sites), tend to have horrifically over-inflated egos (especially the young ones), and typically think they know everything there is to know about writing.

However, the irony here is that their reviews are either incredibly vague and say absolutely nothing that can help the author, or just consist of blatant insults.

JX Valentine didn't show the negative attitudes that the majority of critics exhibit on the internet, and therefore, I think she should be nominated for best reviewer.

“Ala!” his Pokemon yelled.

“Look!” Ethan growled, showing Alakazam his uninjured hand. “I’d appreciate it if you’d give me a little space. I’m fine! I was fine last time and the time before that! Get off my back about it!”

“Ala!” Alakazam exclaimed, taking a step closer.

“Of course not! Besides that, it’s something that I want to do. Its only ever helped us anyway.”

“Kazam, zam ala.”

“Oh screw you! You’ve been with me every step of the way. You can’t just spring these complaints on me out of nowhere. If you have a problem with something I’m doing, then say something right then. Don’t just spring it on me out of nowhere when the situation has passed. You do this all the time!”

“Kazamam!” his Pokemon challenged.

“I don’t have to ask for your permission! I involve you in my decisions because I love you! I’ve never led any of you into anything we couldn’t handle and I’m not about to start! Let it go!”

“Kazam!” Alakazam accused, baring his small teeth.

“Shut up,” Ethan hissed, roughly shoving his Pokemon backwards.

“Ala!” his Pokemon yelled. As the sound left his lips, the psychic Pokemon flexed his right hand, calling an orb of psychic energy to hover above his palm. The ball gyrated quickly, eager to be released. The colors thrummed from purple to black, with grey streaks swirling around its center.

“Do it,” Ethan whispered, grabbing his Pokemon’s hand.

“Kazam,” his Pokemon replied.

“Come on, do it,” Ethan said, egging the Pokemon on.

“Alakazam.”

“You lack the courage of your convictions,” Ethan accused, shoving his face into the swirling ball of energy.

“KAZAM!”

As Ethan’s faced grazed the exterior of the ball, his flesh began to fester and burn, quickly bypassing first degree and going straight to third. His Alakazam quickly ended the flow of power feeding the orb’s energy, effectively saving his master from further injury. The attack had broiled the lower half of his face, making him quickly reel backwards in pain. He stumbled backwards, his hands reaching up in reflex to put pressure on the wound.

He watched Alakazam approach, his eyes beginning to tear with worry. The pain he felt vanished instantly as he took a breath and centered himself; the flakes were already doing their work. As he continued to breathe, the burned and ruined flesh on his face evaporated in a stream of black smoke, being replaced by the tan, flawless skin that had been there before. Reaching up again, he felt his unblemished skin stretch itself tight across his chin.

Looking at his Alakazam, he stated, “That’s why we do this. This is why we’re out here.”

“Kazam,” his Pokemon lamented.

“I do value your opinion, but we agreed on this a long time ago.”

Alakazam just stared at him.

“And you will not mention that incident again. Do you understand?”

“Kazam,” his Pokemon nodded.

Ethan walked away, the gravel crunching delightfully under his boots.

Most Heartbreaking Scene

“You know, lately I’ve been wanting to battle you again...”

It’s really hard to ignore the quiver in my voice as I croak these words into the receiver. I just pray you don’t notice it at the other end of the line. I just pray you’re listening. I just pray that I didn’t just go right to voicemail – you’re always so quiet I can never quite tell.

I just pray you’ll actually stop by.

Best Action Scene

Over fifty rock Pokemon surrounded them, the ones nearest to the front gasping for the air that had been sucked away from them by Vibrava’s attack. Most of them were growling, making their intentions clear. They would not stop, and they had the numbers to back it up.

“I’m sorry,” Dorian said to the crowd. “We had nothing to do with it.”

Gathering his emotions, he walked forward and stood in front of Shelton. Raising his fists, he waited. It would come in a moment. The inevitable tide of anger would wash across them and leave nothing behind. Dorian thought that at a moment like this, things would become simple. Clarity would chime in and he would know exactly what to do. Nothing came however, nothing to give him hope. He was with their Pokemon, and his mind was blank.

“Duduck,” Golduck stated, tapping him on the shoulder.

Dorian turned, vaguely aware that the rock type Pokemon around them were rushing forward. He watched Golduck gently stroke Shelton’s cheek, a peculiar milky glow beginning to take shape around his head. He placed Shelton in Dorian’s arms, pushing her against him to make sure he had a strong grip.

Faster than Dorian could think, he, Shelton, and their Pokemon were yanked upwards and shoved to the right, high above the incoming stampede of rock Pokemon. They flew through the air, being guided by Golduck’s formidable mind. Dorian saw everything, he felt all of it. His group was guided into the crater the earlier explosion had made, being pushed tenderly out of harm’s way.

Just before they passed below the lip of the crater, Dorian saw the rock Pokemon race towards Golduck, he saw the mauve energy around Golduck flare brightly as they reached him, and as the first attack connected, he saw the sapphire Pokemon explode.

Most Heartwarming Scene

As Charizard deals the final blow to that Alakazam, you snuggle into my hair, the way that you always used to do, and I just know that your happiness must be real. What else could it be?

Most Memorable Quote

Floaroma Town was barely an outskirt of a suburb, a small stopover village nestled in the woods at the bottom of Mount Coronet. In comparison, Celestic Town may well have been a bustling center of trade. But where Celestic was surrounded by perpetual mountain haze, looming pine trees, and a jagged, knife-like terrain that combined to cause Sam to fear for his life at the movement of his own shadow, Floaroma Town was much more sleepy and calm. The village was literally alive with colors; flowers bloomed from the east end to the western highway out towards Eterna City, and roads and walkways were shaped windingly around their beds so as to molest them as little as possible.

Survival Project, by diamondpearl876. Probably one of the most original stories I have ever read, Pokemon oriented or otherwise. The characters will enrage you, and warm your heart. Beautifully described and wonderfully written, this story has characters that verge on being perfect. The characters hold this story together in a web of flaws, dreams, and hope in a way that is hard to match.

Nomination Number Two
Anima Ex Machina, by JX Valentine. If you want a thrill ride full of character struggle, amazingly descriptive battles, and an intricate plot that sucks you in deeper with every chapter, then look no further. Not only is JX Valentine one of the most talented authors I've ever seen, but her fic has depth and emotion that can't be fully explained until you read it.

Best Pokemon One-Shot -

The Motionless Journey of Youngster Ian, by Psychic. Wonderfully written and incredibly original, Psychic takes a look at a mechanic in the games that I had never thought about. While parts of the story made me laugh, other parts made me sad, while a lot of it just weirded me out in a very pleasant way.

Best Plot - Brother's Bond, by Sid87. Characters who act on something solely out of love usually rub me the wrong way; but not here. The gorgeous story that Sid87 has created makes you believe in a bond that you can't touch or see. By far one of my favorite stories on the board, and I still get excited for every chapter.


Most Original Overall - Anima Ex Machina, by JX Valentine. Out of all the fic's I read, this by far takes the cake for originality. Aliens, mutation, violence, endless forests, etc. How could you go wrong?

Best Romantic Relationship - Bill/Lanette, Anima Ex Machina, by JX Valentine. I hope I'm not the only one who thinks they actually have a relationship haha. It could be said that they don't, but when I think of Best Romantic Relationship, they are instantly where my mind goes. Sure, Bill may be somewhat transformed, and Lanette gets pretty violent with him quite often, but I believe there is a very obvious love beneath everything happening in this story that really inspires.

Best Non-Romantic Relationship/Interaction - Barry and Sammy, Brother's Bond, by Sid87. From the fights, to the bonding moments, to the sarcasm or the hilarious back and forth's, these two really crack me up

Best Original Species - The Ixodida, Anima Ex Machina, by JX Valentine. Seriously, like anyone else could even come close to topping these horribly awesome creatures.

Most Suspenseful Fic - Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Overthrown, by Knightfall. From paragraph to paragraph while reading this fic, I usually inch closer and closer to the screen to the point that I start seeing spots. So yeah, pretty suspenseful.

Most Heartbreaking Fic - Survival Project, by diamondpearl876. Only fic this year that has actually made me sniffle

Best Comedy Fic - 404 Error, by Missingno. Master. Though I've never commented on his work, Missingno. Master writes a wonderful tale full of Glitch Pokemon and hilarious facepalm moments. I'm not really into Comedy, but this has me hooked.

Best Fantasy/Sci-Fi Fic - Revenant, by SilentMemento. Easily the best in this genre, SilentMemento will take you on a terrifying thrill ride into space and into a person that'll shake you down to your bones!

Best Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Fic - Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Overthrown, by Knightfall. To be completely honest, I'm not too crazy about the PMD games, or even really the fics, but this one changed my mind on the entire concept. Thrilling characters, addictive battles, and casual heroics all combine to make this a very compelling story. Bought my first PMD game two weeks ago haha

Best Human Main Character - Sammy Stark, Brother's Bond, by Sid87. This was hard for me at first. I tried to think of the qualities that would be needed for someone to win this, but I couldn't figure out what they were. So I thought about out of all the fic's I read, who I would trust the most to show compassion, decency, love, and respect to anyone. That right there is Sammy Stark.

Best Non-Human Main Character - Senori, Survival Project, by diamondpearl876. This is a no-brainer for me, and anyone who hasn't checked out this character yet needs to get on it. Fantastically deep and overwhelmingly personal, Senori is a Pokemon that anyone can relate to and care about.

Best Human Supporting Character - Glover, As the World Turns Back Around, by Glover. From the love for his daughter that bleeds across the screen, to his plethora of amazing Pokemon and his can-do attitude, Glover is one of the biggest things that holds this story together.

Best Non-Human Supporting Character - Tiny, As the World Turns Back Around, by Glover. Completely hilarious and prone to all sorts of endearing moments.

Deus X Machina by Deadly.Braviary. It's a robot uprising described in short, very powerful bursts. For that reason, from the very start, it catches your attention and holds it like a vice.

The Machines, Deus X Machina by Deadly.Braviary. Oh God, all of them are chill-inducing. From the calm and calculating 4242 to S.H.A.W.'s chilling message to humanity, all of the Machines are positively terrifying as well as completely and beautifully alien.

The Cutlerine delivers yet another fantastic epic, this time adapting the storyline of Black and White. Peppered with quasi-demons, black humour, and cats, this story would win the 'Most Appropriate Title' award as well (if there was one).

A witty story set in a version of Kanto populated almost entirely by glitch Pokemon. What happens when Red, an ordinary trainer from the 'real' Kanto falls into Tanko with his Charmander? Hilarity, that's what.

Carry on, Blissey, by ChloboShoka
It's a medical drama, with nurse Blissey as the eponymous protagonist. It makes several nods to game and anime canon, and yet remains a wholly unexpected work. No genre can categorise this.

It's Unova, but Unova as you've never seen it before! Regenschein's, the friendly neighbourhood Black City department store, brings Chaos upon us all right before the pagan festival of Eostre, and the world switches itself at midnight, when all that resembles the events of Pokemon Black, becomes the property of Pokemon White!

The ... Actually, IDEK what it's called ... the universe of PMD: Overthrown, by Knightfall. Yeah, that should be OK.
This is a fantastic, insane, surreal, horrifying, brilliant place. It is pure magic. The characters in it are either as crazy as the universe itself, or more crazy than that. And, I being the lover of insanity I am, nominate this universe for this award because ... Gah. You read the fic and tell me I shouldn't nominate it.

It's fun to watch these childhood friends bicker, all the while thinking, "Yep... He likes her," so that you smugly grin and watch their friendship becomes a relationship reminiscent of Ron and Hermione.

Best Non-Romantic Relationship/Interaction
Sammy and Tommy, Brothers' Bond, by Sid87
How far would you go to save your brother? That is the entire plot of this story in a nutshell, and this fic shows a brilliant relationship between two fantastically real brothers. Bro in a coma? No problem, I'll just hop over to Sinnoh, catch a couple of legendaries, and come back and fix stuff.

Smogons, The Epic of Epicness, by Missingno. Master

"Smogons are Pokémon trainers," explained Miror B. "Or at least, they were. According to legend, when a Pokémon trainer allows his or her zealous desire to become the best get the better of them, over the years they undergo a sort of transformation, and become this less-than-human thing. When one challenges you to a battle, you cannot refuse, and if you lose, you become one of them. Moreover, they use these strange powers of theirs to impose ridiculous restrictions on the battles they wage, such as, no one side can have more than one Pokémon asleep at the same time, not counting Pokémon using Rest." ... "What's more, Smogons have no emotions, other than a desire to battle and win," continued Miror B. "They do not feel, so any attempts to appeal to any part of them that may still be human are futile. They have no emotional connection to their Pokémon whatsoever, and this emotionless state eventually spreads to the Pokémon."


"So they don't have souls," Cheeseball stated.


"Essentially, yes," Miror B. nodded.

Best Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Fic
PMD: Overthrown, by Knightfall
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon fics aren't a rare breed, but PMD with an insane Metagross? Plus, it also has Gear, one of my favourite characters, the eternal 'good cop' Magnezone. But, because this fic is twisted, bad stuff happens to everyone. For example, take Leo. He used to be human, now he's a Charmeleon. Then he's 'employed' by a freaky voice in his head. That's how grippingly surreal this fic is.

Best Trainer Fic
404 Error, by Missingno. Master
A glitch-infested version of Kanto, with two constantly arguing childhood friends and a hapless trainer from the more familiar version of Kanto journeying through it. As they try to defeat gyms, they also contend with two villainous teams at war with each other, Debug and Error, which are fighting against and for the glitch Pokemon respectively.

The Legend's End, by Scaldaver
It's not just a trainer fic. It's so much more than that. The characters are real and flawed, and you want so much to believe that they'll survive their next battle, because, keeping with the 'dark-and-gritty' theme, there's also a legendary-killer out there, and it's the job of the protagonists to unite the other legends in battle against this killer. And they want the badges too!

Best Canon Character-Centric
Roots, by Mrs. Lovett
An origin story which is a trainerfic as well, Roots gives us the story of Michael Rowan, rebellious teenager and expert strategist, and his adventures through Sinnoh. Complete with glitchy Pokedex prototypes and Team Galactic, this is simply a damn good story.

Best Non-Human Main Character
The child, Salvage, by Negrek
Yeah, it's called the child. It impersonates dead people. It punches Charizards and PokeDex machines. You don't know its name, its gender, its motivation to do what it does. But still, somehow, whether you believe it's 'good' or 'evil', you want to see more of it.

Best Human Supporting Character
Barry West, Brothers' Bond, Sid87
Yeah, he's crazy. And he does stupid crap like throwing a sailor overboard into freezing, freezing water, and saying, "I'm gonna terrorize all the ecos." But he's a quirky, fun guy, and when he needs to be serious, the stuff he says is right from the heart, you can tell. But when he's not serious ... he's still a lot of fun.

Best Non-Human Villain
Teiresias, Crack'd, by Cutlerine
The first time you meet Teiresias, it's a blind, scarred, and extremely freaky Liepard.     Spoiler:- Spoilered so as to not spoil the plot for anyone who hasn't read the story::

A while after, you realise Teiresias is not just a Liepard. It's some kind of demon, able to possess mortal bodies to anchor it to our world, while still being able to walk through a shadowy nether-realm.
 

And, seeing as Crack'd isn't finished yet, I think I can safely bet that this particular villain is going to get even freakier.

Zub made a gesture at his empty belt loop to indicate he had no Pokémon.

The man’s eyes narrowed, dangerously so. “I see. I win through forfeit,” he whispered. “Now I, as required by the League, have to mug you.”

“Wait wait wait wait!” exclaimed Death, reappearing in front of Zub, donning a pair of what appeared to be Pikachu ears.. “I’m a Pokémon! I’m Pikachu!” Realizing his mistake, he changed his brilliantly balck robe into an outfit resembling a Pikachu. “Pika pika,” he added helpfully.

The man’s eyes lit up once more. “A POGEYMAN! AND IT IS CUUU~UTE!” groping his belt for his Pokéball, he promptly threw it, releasing a Magikarp.

“Oo, this’ll be fun!” exclaimed Zub’s ‘Pikachu’. “Especially after he called me ‘cute’.”

“EXCELLENT!” said their opponent giddily. “MAGIKARP, USE YOUR ♥FANTABULOUS♥ SPLASH ATTACK!”

The Magikarp’s eyes narrowed. Lightning and thunder struck from a distance. The fish Pokémon rose up into the sky, blue streams of light flowing over it. More lightning.

Death whistled. “Our special effects guy better not blow the budget on this fish.”

Magikarp, faster than a speeding Remoraid, sped to Death, unleashing its ultimate attack….

Magikarp flailed a little bit, then fell over on the ground, gasping for air. Death gave a confused glance over to Zub, then punted Magikarp away, instantly defeating it.

“HYOOOOOOOI!” screamed their opponent, doubling over as if he was hit in the groin with something heavy. “MY POGEYMAN!”

“Do we win?” asked Death in a nonchalant manner.

“NO!” screamed the man. “I HAVE FIVE MORE OF THESE THINGS!”

Death frowned. After a moment of thinking, he came up with a solution. “Would you like a hug from this ADOWABLE Pikachu?”
“Boy howdy!” shouted the man, and ran up to hug Death, where he dropped dead.

“There we go,” said Death , grabbing the man’s remaining Pokeballs. “Who’s up for grilled fish for dinner?”

He found Koga a disgusting specimen of a human being. A man who takes pleasure out of killing is a warped and twisted man thought Blaine, as Koga excitedly began preparing for the mission.

“How can you sleep at night?” Blaine asked.

“Ha, you’re disgusted by me, aren’t you?” Koga said, smiling.

“Yes. You’re a ninja. A man who kills people under the disguise of shadows and darkness. How is that honourable?”

“I would very much like to meet those rocks, sir. Perhaps they can teach me a lesson in humility, sir,” Noah responded in as serious of a tone Leo thought impossible to reach. Torrent stood and stared at the Dewott for a moment, not knowing what exactly to make of the statement.

“Just shut up for now, Noah. I can’t talk to you anymore. The camp healer says it’s bad for my health to hold a direct conversation with you for more than two minutes at a time. So, just stay there and stay quiet while I deal with our guests,” he said, choosing to ignore the recruit until later. He turned to the other side of the room where Jay and Kelly were seated. Leo watched as his colossal stature towered over him.

Seeker decided to leave the cave too and fly into the icy winds. As she'd come up slower than when she'd tried before, her body wasn't working as hard to keep up with the thin cold air. Maybe that was the secret, to get used to the thin air little by little. But then how long would it take to fully break through the sky?

Finding a rock jutting out of a wall, she landed there and listened around her. Not that far below her, Cyrus had already found a fight for Sneasel in a snover. Gyarados was complaining about the cold and ice, while Murkrow was suddenly hyper and energetic, fluttering around the group. However, Cyrus didn't feel anything for them, not even annoyance. They were like parts of his machines: not as important as the whole, just things to use. Did he feel the same for her?

No, definitely not. He had been pleased with her at least once, and he allowed concern to lead him to throw a battle rather than knock her out. Maybe she had just been a part of his designs once, but Seeker was pretty sure that she was more important to him than that now. He just didn't let those feelings and thoughts rise above his internal defenses.

The sky was full of moisture, in the form of snow and clouds. There were more clouds overhead, so it wasn't a time she'd usually try to fly into the sky. Then again, what if the presence of all that moisture helped her? She would have a full radar view of the air around her and could notice something unusual. Maybe she could succeed now.

Even as she thought of it, she had to wonder why. Why did she want to go through to the other side of the sky? It was just curiosity at first, to know what was there. And then it was because she had always failed and hoped that she might just make it this time. But then, what was the point of it? Whatever was on the other side of the sky... it didn't matter. And it didn't matter because Cyrus was on this side of the sky.

It was her dream, but it didn't really matter. Only what Cyrus wanted mattered. Even if he wanted to replace her, it didn't matter. It was okay.

There was a tinge of sadness when she thought of that, but that passed away into numbness quickly. It was a relief to think that she didn't need to worry about what her goals should be, because they'd end up passed over in favor of his goals anyhow. As long as she was near him, she was... happy wasn't quite the right term for it. Content. It wouldn't matter if there was silence or noise around her. When she heard him and knew his thoughts, she would know what to do. Even if her own heart was silent.

And that turned out to be the breakthrough she needed.

A few minutes later, Cyrus had the other two members of his team evolved. They had sounded pleased, but hopeful that he might let them go soon if he didn't feel anything for them. Seeker wasn't bothered by this. He still had some use for them, so she would tolerate their foolishness. Once they had been recalled, she flew over to meet with him.

“A little late for the effect I wanted in having a crobat,” he said, reaching over to rub her ear while she hovered by him. “But good. It proves the falseness of what was believed.” And he smiled.

Bill opened his mouth, but without warning, Adam interrupted him.

Something about her seems familiar. Ask her if she is the advisor to the empress.

Although he had no idea where Adam was going with this, Bill knew he had nothing to lose if he followed. After all, either way, he knew that he would be fighting this ixodida and potentially the army she had amassed behind him. The question was when. Straightening his back as much as he could, he took a deep breath and spoke.

"Are you the advisor to the empress?"

Pandora lifted her head. "I am and always will be. My loyalty to Her Majesty is limitless, and it is my pleasure to serve her through my wisdom and abilities."

Long-winded as ever. I know this creature. Bill, you must tell her to deliver a message to her empress.

"What?" Bill whispered.

Just trust me.

"I really hope this doesn't end badly."

It will end favorably for us, no matter what happens.

Bill exhaled. A strange feeling of dread crept into him, but knowing how large of an army was behind him and how powerful the ixodida were, he once again realized it wouldn't exactly hurt him to follow Adam's lead. At least Adam seemed to have a good idea of how to navigate the situation.

"Then I have a message for Her Majesty," he said.

Holding her tail still, Pandora tilted her head. "Oh? Then send it, rogue. She will be entertained by what you have to say."

I do not doubt that, Adam responded. Bill, repeat after me. Ready?

He nodded slowly. "I am."

To the empress, I give you a warning.

Lifting his chin, Bill announced, "To the empress, I give you a warning."

For it is true that my partner was a member of the Gray Rebellion.

"For it is true that my partner was a member of the Gray Rebellion."

And against the Violet Throne…

We do indeed declare war.

"We do indeed declare war." He paused for a beat to think about what he had just said. When it finally sank in, he snapped a glance to the side. "Wait, what?!"

Steven swiveled his head towards his companion. "Bill, what are you doing?!"

"I don't know!" Bill hissed in response.

Before he had a chance to explain himself, his enemy pulled her feet under her and stood atop the ice mountain. Her eyes darkened, but otherwise, her expression was just as blank as ever.

"Is that your answer to Her Majesty, little one?" she drawled. "If that is the case, then my response on behalf of the empire is this."

She lifted a hand, made a swirling pattern in the air, and extended a long claw directly at Bill and Steven.

"Stop them by any means necessary," she stated.

Dark shapes lifted off the trees as one giant flock. The sky was practically obscured by them as far as Bill and Steven could see. At that point, the champion kept his blue-gray eyes to the sky as he addressed the researcher.

"Well, Bill. Ready?"

"Not really."

Steven shook his head and drew four poké balls – two for each hand – out of his pockets. "Neither am I."

Bill glanced at his companion. "Looks like we don't have a choice. Shall we, then?"

"Let's."

As the flock dove at them, Bill and Steven sprang in opposite directions, directly into the fight.
