Because water types learning ice moves is a very common thing.

its tricky it could just be the shapes they used to make the water attack, but they did show each starter using a move type that matches there's so im going with it being a water attack.

You know, I bet Chespin can learn Sunny Day to go along with that Solarbeam. Hey, I bet he evolves into a Grass/Fire type.

^ To everyone saying stuff like this: guess what. No.

I'm currently looking for a with its Hidden Ability, Volt Absorb. If you'll trade one, or you have a Safari, please PM me!

I've finished my Pokédex, so feel free to get in touch if you need something for yours (I can't trade many legendaries, but I do have multiple of a few that I might trade for shinies).

Your logic is reasonable, but at the same time that picture that poetry posted made the attack look like an ice attack. I'm torn. I think Water/Ice would be a good type.

I'm having Chespin! As I've mentioned in discussions on Zelda Informer and Facebook, I am obliged to choose him because he has Sandslash's feet, and I really hope he evolves into a big cool fast powerhouse...and not some bulky mess like all the other Grass starters besides Sceptile.

Pokedons, I think his 'winter coat' looks more like old man hair, to go with his old man specs.

The attack is obviously a water attack. It having snow flakes in its animation just implies that it may either be just ofr showing that it is cold water, or maybe it is like Scald, but instead of burning it freezes. Possibilities are endless.

    EDIT:

Also, winter dressed? I don't see anything that makes Froakie look winter dressed. You may be talking about the white thing on its back, which happens to be foam, not snow.

tl;dr: At this stage an attack won't really tell us much about Froakie's possible typing.

Even if it's a ice attack doesn't mean it a Ice type pokemon. If that the case, my Emboar clearly be a Fire and Electric

Damn you beat me to posting this idea lol. Betting that it's a new water move that is like Scald but the 30% burn is like a 5% freeze chance.

I think it's just a little, insignificant graphical detail which just happens to look similar to a snowflake, and which nobody would have noticed without freeze-framing.

Agreed, there's no way they'd make a 30% chance freeze move as that would be incredibly broken.

But snow flakes aren't really "cold water", are they? They're crystallised droplets of water vapour, i.e ice.
