Deep within the bowels of a millennia year’s old temple in the Unova desert, excavation projects proceed at a steady pace. Truckloads of valuable minerals and artifacts are exported all around the pokemon world for research and storage purposes. Pewter city has long been famous for its collection of rocks and as such was a natural place to display the most stunning or precious pieces that come out of Unova. However, one minor detail that was ignored and hidden from the general public is that some translators at the dig sites discovered what could be warnings of a curse or something similar. These people were dismissed and made fun of, with the managers in charge claiming that the translators had misunderstood the texts and that they were getting in the way of progress. Weeks later the ones who had discovered the warnings were proven right, unfortunately by then it was already too late..
The troubles first began with the opening of a new exhibit in Pewter city. Rows and columns of shiny, football sized gems sat on display for all to see. At around noon, some of the day laborers who had set up the gallery suddenly started behaving unruly and violent. Security officers on the scene quickly restrained most of the troublemakers but for some strange reason, seemed to be unable to catch them all. Not wanting to see the event ruined several local pokemon trainers released their Onix's and Steelix to help put an end to the situation.
For a few moments it appeared as though everything was going to be fine but that is when things went from bad to worse. In a shocking turn of events, the massive pokemon turn on their trainers and go on a rampage! People stampede for the exits and screaming fills the convention center where the exhibit was being held. Hardly anyone notices that the workers who had turned violent were now free and staggering around in an odd fashion. Not only that but the officers who had detained the laborers also began acting strangely. One word can be heard above all of the chaos when an extremely pale day laborer screams it, "BRAINS!!" At the mention of this word, the former pokemon, security officers and workers are reminded of their greatest deficiency and go into a frenzy, attacking anyone nearby! They were no longer human nor pokemon, they were now Zombies!
Many were shocked by the appearance of undead monsters but what was especially troubling is that even thick skinned pokemon seemed to not be immune from the condition. Out of the 700 or so people in attendance of the Pewter city event, only 18 managed to escape the carnage alive. There was no need for a press release because similar outbreaks were occurring world wide, with equally devastating results. In only a matter of days, the majority of humans and pokemon were either dead, incapacitated or zombified. 90% of all Gym leaders are killed while trying to evacuate their respective towns and the undead hordes show no signs of stopping.
In an ironic twist of fate, one of the first places to witness the zombie apocalypse also becomes the site of the greatest amount of human resistance. Indigo Plateau stands as the last "Official" stronghold against the zombies. Where regions such as Johto have been reduced to almost complete wasteland, the natural geography and difficult terrain of the plateau made it the ideal location to form a defensive line. Before the routes were cut off, surviving pokemon trainers, world leaders and others flocked to the area. A massive network failure across all pokemon centers rendered the pokemon storage system useless and left many trainers with only their lead pokemon at the time as useable. Even so, thousands of volunteers defend the mountain fortress but they can only hold out for so long with the zombies doing their best to approach from lower Johto and the now overrun Viridian city.
While things look bleak elsewhere, the concentration of zombies is still relatively low inside of Kanto. (excluding Pewter and Viridian cities) thanks in part to Mt. Moon acting as a sort of barrier, which the zombies have so far been unable to navigate. There are still massive mobs of the ghouls roaming around the base of Indigo Plateau and what is left of Pewter city. To the east, some of the brightest minds of the pokemon world gather in a Saffron city Silph Co. lab in order to try and find a scientific answer to the zombie invasion. However, precious time is short and the research center's defenses are estimated not to last much longer. Humans and pokemon still fight the good fight all throughout the region but currently very few places can be called "safe”. Even though the bulk of the horde is in western Kanto, zombies still appear elsewhere because the Magnet train tunnel was not sealed up right away. It is currently blocked but not before an unspecified number of the creatures managed to get through.
With the zombie menace nearly dominating the globe, an unknown government initializes a contingency program code named - Gengar Protocol. Reserve operatives based on Cinnabar island are tasked with tracking down and capturing anyone suspected of being a zombie. The secondary objective of the group is to contain the zombie advance within Kanto at all costs. Essentially this organization wants to round up zombies and keep them out of trouble until a cure can be developed. Due to budget cuts, Gengar protocol agents are not heavily funded but they still have some of the best equipment and supplies available, not to mention the Cinnabar island holding center. (a part cave/ secret command center that is capable of safely detaining a large number of zombies)
Societies darkest hour has come, will pokemon and mankind be able to weather this storm? Or has the time arrived for a new dominant species to rule the planet?
In this RP there are not so much factions as they are more like different available roles:
1. Gengar protocol Government operative
Lightly armed and well supplied, it is the job of these agents to track down potentially infected (cursed?) parties and capture them. They are authorized to use lethal force on any zombies that are considered to be too far gone to help. Operatives are effective at taking down small numbers of zombies but start to have problems if more than 3 - 4 are clustered together at the same time. In trying to keep a low profile, they do not have a standardized uniform but they do carry unique ID badges.
Weapons and equipment?: Yes, Tools for stunning targets, light body armor, hover dollies and they may also carry small firearms. Operatives have access to small boats inside of Kanto borders.
Npc assistance?: Yes, up to 2 humans and as many as 1 pokemon for each person.
(If teammates perish, they cannot be replaced without traveling back to the HQ)
Headquarters: Cinnabar island
Daily food usage: Low
2. Citizen survivor
An everyday person just trying to stay alive. Whether bashing zombies in the streets or hiding out someplace, these people want to get through this thing in one piece.
Weapons and equipment?: None, but they can usually keep whatever they scavenge
Npc assistance?: Yes, up to 1 pokemon
HQ: n/a
Daily food usage: Medium
3. Wild/ tamed pokemon survivor (non flying, non ghost, non legend)
An unaffiliated pokemon that has managed to escape the initial carnage. The world has not died off yet and most pokemon are actually pretty good at surviving in the wild. The introduction of a new brain hungry predator makes looking for food more dangerous than ever.
Weapons and equipment?: None
Npc assistance?: None
HQ: n/a
Daily food usage: Low
4. Zombie Lord
This role includes some of the earliest people to become zombified. While no one is really in command of all zombies, these special variants have developed over time and gained the ability to lead a certain number of lesser undead. (up to a distance of about a kilometer or two) Normally a zombie is a decayed yet sturdy, slow moving creature that will do anything to eat brains but Zombie Lords are a bit stronger, faster and smarter than normal zombies, although they are still mostly driven by the desire to feed. Zombie lords have a small mysterious mark on their forehead that resembles a downward pointing Sierpinski triangle that has a very faint golden glow.
Weapons and equipment?: None
Npc assistance?: Yes, up to 5 zombies at once. You may choose any combination of either human or pokemon type zombies. If one of them is killed, then they can be replaced after 1 post.
HQ: Pewter city
Daily food usage: High
Other information:
For the pruposes of this RP, a zombie is considered killed if its head is destroyed.
A zombie bite is fatal. Although the speed of death may be slowed down in certain cases, where it might take a few more bites to kill something. (steel, rock pokemon, etc)
The legendary pokemon are well aware of the zombie crisis but since the cursed items were clearly marked with warning messages, the most powerful pokemon have decided to leave humanity to fend for itself. Similarly, Ghost pokemon would prefer that the humans survive but have gone into hiding to prevent the possible creation of any ghost zombies. It was decided that the wall phasing ability gained from such a fusion would spell almost certain doom for any survivors.
As far as the Great air battle of 2013 goes, there is bad news and there is good news: The bad news is that nearly all aircraft/ flying pokemon are grounded, destroyed and/or injured. The good news is that as a result of the battle, almost all flight capable zombies have been wiped out.
Explanation of Daily food usage:
This rating determines how often a character needs to have the mention of food or eating in a post. Go too long without a meal and your character may become weak or in extreme cases, even starve to death. A "High" rating means that feeding needs to be nearly constant to stay at full strength. (at least every other post or so) On the opposite hand, a "Low" rating means that food is not much of an issue and these characters are assumed to have somewhat easy access to it most of the time. (mentioning food in a post is optional or infrequent) "Medium" is somewhere in between with food being needed after every couple of posts. (3 - 5)
This RP will use headers to keep track of players at a glance. It should appear at the top of each post and include your characters name, role, location and fullness level (health).
A characters current health should be put in parentheses. For each npc under your control put their name and a dash below the main characters info. After that, add their health status based on this chart:
Fine: Full strength
Hungry: Need to eat soon but still mostly ok
Starving: Character is weakened and slowed.
Low rated roles will almost always have "fine" health while zombies are going to be hungry most of the time. (on a side note, the Zombie Lords High rating is a little misleading because even though zombies need to be continuously killing and eating random victims to stay at full power, the npc zombies under a Lords control can be replaced fairly quickly if they are KO'd)
Here is an example:
Pete
Human survivor
Celadon city poke mart
(Fine)
As always, no controlling other player characters without permission.
If you are attacking someone else be sure to give them plenty of room to respond and try to avoid auto hitting. (it is fine against random non player characters however)
If someone is pinned under a rock, unarmed and surrounded by opponents then there is little doubt of what will probably be the outcome but we still want to see if that outmatched person can come up with a creative enough solution to somehow escape. (let us try not to get too ridiculous though)
Players may start from any location within this alternate version of Kanto except for a few key places: Viridian city, Pewter city, Saffron city, Indigo Plateau and Cinnabar island. These areas can only be chosen as a beginning point if your role states that it is your head quarters.
