Making the Most out of Squirtle

It's been about 5 years since I last played Firered/Leafgreen, and I want to get the most out of my favorite starter. Any recommendations?

Well you could always ev train it....
But i would not recommend that in a game run through.

Instead, give it a good moveset.
You don't need rapid spin, no one in game uses entry hazards.
Blastiose is more suited to a defensive role so this set found on smogon would be great for you to use

~ Ice Beam
~ Sleep Talk / Rapid Spin / Toxic
~ Rest
