Default Mountians And Mole Hills: A Doubles Sand Team

    Hey guys,

Its been a while since I've made a new team but with the International tournament coming up I need a doubles worthy team. My idea for a sand team actually came from having success with a mini one in the battle subway. Now dont get me wrong, I've been comp battling for awhile so I know the difference between the two. The two main things I need help with are: 1. The second half of my team, after only having to worry about three for the subway, I need to make sure the others have good synergy with the originals. 2. Making the changes to the movesets so they fit for doubles.

    Team at a glance:

    In Detail:

    Latios @ Dragon Gem
    Trait: Levitate
    EVs 4 HP/252 SpA/252 Speed
    Timid
    Draco Meteor
    Psychic
    Surf
    Thunderbolt
Latios serves well as a lead with dragon gem +Draco Meteor OHKOing most Pokemon who dont resist it. Psychic is used for STAB when I dont want to be forced out after a DM, it hits a vareity of pokemon for at least neutral damage. Surf and Thunderbolt are for coverage; surf is the only real way it has to hit steels and thunderbolt is for Gyrados. Timid nature boosts Latios's special attack and dragon gem makes DM extremely deadly.

    Tyranitar@ Focus Sash
    Trait: Sand Stream
    EVs: 4 HP/252 Atk/252 Speed
    Adamant
    Dragon Dance
    Rock Slide
    Crunch
    Fire Punch
Tyranitar is the most important member of this team as Sand Stream allows me to set up sand needed to form the combo with Excadrill and produce the main effect of this team. Dragon Dance allows for set up and T-tar to outspeed many of its main threats. Rock Slide is his most powerful STAB attack and hits both opponents in doubles. Crunch is for Psychics and is a more accurate STAB than rock slide. Fire Punch is to counter Steel and Grass types that would otherwise wall this set. Adamant nature increases Tyranitar's attack and using a focus sash guarantees that Sand Stream will kick in.

    Excadrill@ Air Balloon
    Trait: Sand Rush
    EVs: 4 HP/252 Atk/252 Speed
    Adamant
    Swords Dance
    Rock Slide
    Earthquake
    X-Scissor
Excadrill is unstoppable in a sand storm and has ridiculously high attack after a swords dance. STAB Earthquake provides great coverage and along with rock slide hits both opponents but is more accurate. X-scissor is there for coverage to hit dark types hard. The Air Balloon eliminates Excadrill's Ground weakness.

    Scizor@ Leftovers
    Trait: Technician
    EVs: 252 HP/40 Atk/216 SpD
    Adamant
    Swords Dance
    Bullet Punch
    Bug Bite
    Roost
Scizor is arguably one of the best Sand Sweepers there is, capable of wrecking havoc after just one swords dance. It gets priority STAB from Bullet Punch, the power of which is doubled by technician. Bug Bite provides Scizor another powerful STAB move and has the potential to cripple Resters and pokemon like dragons and shell smashers that rely on Lum Berries to cure their status side effects. Roost allows Scizor to self heal. The use of Leftovers increases Scizor's longevity without costing a turn.

    Tentacruel@ Black Sludge
    Trait: Rain Dish
    EVs: 252 HP/236 Def/20 Speed
    Bold
    Rapid Spin
    Toxic
    Hydro Pump
    Protect
Two of the most important Pokemon on my team (Excadrill and Scizor) are weak to fire attacks, What better way to solve this then to check with a water type that can fill multiple roles? Rapid Spin is the most important move as it allows me to spin away hazards that could cripple Latios on the after DM switch and also break T-Tar's Sash. Toxic allows Tentacruel to spread status through out the opposing team. I chose Hydro Pump over Scald because it was more powerful on a sand team. Protect allows me to recover more health with Black Sludge and rack up toxic damage. I decided to go with Rain Dish for Tentacruel's ability in an effort to use rain against rain teams.

    Celebi@ Life Orb
    Trait: Natural Cure
    EVs: 252 HP/236 SpD/20 Speed
    Calm
    Giga Drain
    Recover
    U-Turn
    Perish Song
Another huge weakness for this team is water so I decided to use Celebi for its good bulk and Grass typing to counter this. Giga Drain is the primary STAB and provides recovery from Life Orb damage. Recover allows Celebi to stay in longer. U-turn is used to escape unfavorable match ups and deal damage before exiting to take advantage of Natural Cure. Perish Song is there to deal with set up pokemon such as subs or CM abusers as well as a surprise for those expecting me to carry Thunder Wave.

    Thanks for your time.

Trade celebi's item for scizor's item. I don't know much about doubles, but even in singles it'd be something I'd recommend. Doing this will give scizor an offensive item and celebi a defensive item.

Also, before anyone posts saying "excadrill is uber," it isn't on wifi

Thanks a lot, I was actually considering that
    two other things:
    1. Would it be better to have a Choice Band on T-Tar?
    2. Should I swap Tentacruel for a bulky Gayrados?

Haha I know right? I asked for a rate on this team over on somgon and all I got was some guy complaining about Excadrill the Uber

I noticed you said timid ups sp Att where as that is actually modest. Note i am taking this as you want to do doubles? If not disregard the rest. Another thing I noticed was surf perish song and earthquak hit everyone ( including your partner in doubles...( actually I'm not sure about perish song but I assume)) I don't have any experience in doubles but to me it looks to me that your team is more built around single battling

True, Excadrill isn't banned on wifi, but Celebi is. You'll need to find something else to fit that slot.

    I'll start from the bottom.

Celebi - Perish Song isn't very useful as Doubles matches last like 7-10 turns. Singles sets do not work out in Doubles as it's completely different. EVs need to be fixed if this is VGC as if I recall, 8 or 12 EVs are needed for a stat point. Honestly Celebi isn't very good tbh, yes it hs a great move pool but Scizor eats it up and will take Heat Waves left and right. If you really want to use Celebi however, I'd use idk,

    Celebi @ Grass Gem
    Ability: Natural Cure
    Nature: Timid (+Spe, -Atk)
    EVs: 252 SpA / 252 Spe
    - Protect
    - Leaf Storm
    - Earth Power
    - Hidden Power Fire

Idk, that's the best I can come up with for Celebi.

Tentacruel - Entry hazards are pretty much never used in doubles so Rapid Spin is pointless. Toxic as well is pretty useless as I stated for Celebi; matches are very short and fast paced. Again, Black Sludge is useless as 6.25% recovery isn't much in a fast paced meta. The only item that should really be used to heal is Sitrus Berry. Tentacruel isn't very good and you suggested Gyarados so why not try that? Gyarados provides some great Intimidate support.

    Gyarados @ Wacan Berry
    Ability: Intimidate
    Nature: Adamant (+Atk, -SpA)
    EVs: 252 HP / 52 Atk / 140 Def / 20 SpD / 44 Spe
    - Waterfall
    - Icy Wind
    - Taunt
    - Protect

The EVs may look way to elaborate but have their reasoning. Zapdos is one of the more common used Pokemon and the SpD EVs make sure Gyarados survives a Zapdos Thunderbolt with Wacan Berry. Speed EVs allow it to outrun 4 Speed Cresselia and **** it down with Taunt and rest maximizes bulk and atk.

Scizor - Scizor is a great Pokemon and we have something to work with here. I'd recommend going straight 252 Atk and speed with it and replace Superpower over Roost and swap the item to Occa Berry. Setup moves aren't really good in doubles but oh well, might as well try to make the most of them. I'd put Protect over it though but if you want then you can leave it.

Tyranitar - Dragon Dance IMO won't work here unlike setting up with Scizor as Scizor is somewhat common and Bullet Punch will just wreck it. I'd opt for Fire Blast over Fire Punch as it'll do more to the likes of Scizor and such. Now you could put Protect over DD to scout for Bullet Punch or whatever.

Latios - Latios looks alright here except that Surf. Nothing on the team can really take a Surf besides Celebi and Tentacruel as it hits your team as well. Guess you can opt for HP Fire here to take out Scizor who KOs with Bug Bite otherwise.

EDIT: Previous thing was sent via phone so didn't really see the International Tournament thing. Don't know the banlist for it so yeah.

Thanks a lot man, youve helped me a lot. I usually just do singles so I really had no idea what the differences were. Im not stuck on using Celebi but two of my most important guys are weak to water so I was trying to come up with a a bulky grass type that had decent offensive capabilities

If you're water weak, then why not run Absorb Bulb Ludicolo, or Gastrodon for that matter. Abomasnow is also worth checking out, so that you have a bit more playability against Rain.

Atrocious' set for Gyarados looks sound. Just make sure you take care of the opposing Rain team's Thundurus first, because if not, Gyarados won't last very long.
