    Default NewMyth: Internal Drive

Another RP idea^^ thought I'd put it on, see if people are interested.

    NewMyth: Internal Drive

An original RP. PG-13 at least.

The following takes place in an alternate universe similar to our own. The technology has surpassed ours two or three decades ago and thus they are capable of developing things that seem extraordinary to us.

Beliefs or opinions expressed in the RP are not necessarily shared by nor agreed with by the RP leader or other RPers. NewMyth is a fictional creation that is merely based on the world’s mythologies and a modern world’s interpretation of them. Deeper themes will be explored though.

What is mythology today but a way people of the ancient past used to explain the world around them? Now, these stories come across as silly, yet inspirational. They featured heroes, they featured villains and they featured powers beyond our comprehension and grasp.

Then one day you’re (optional) having trouble with your heart. It isn’t beating the way it should. It’s true you’ve been having a lot of stress lately what with you narrowly passing exams in June and now that summer’s here, you find out surprise surprise, you aren’t that popular at school. Being in your teens, your body is still changing and the other teenagers always seem to be one ‘step’ ahead in terms of height, strength and popularity with the other sex. You’ve been running with cold sweat for several nights and so you finally swallow your pride to ask your parents for help with your problems. But they don’t react at all like you thought they would.

They don’t tell you they’re gonna call a therapist or a doctor, they tell you it’s perfectly normal, but… they have to tell you something. You always thought there had to be a reason why you never fit in, but what they came with next wasn’t at all what you were hoping for. You’d spend the next few days thinking you were some kind of freak.

You know that one anatomy lesson you struggled not to fall asleep as the teacher told you about how the heart was thought to be the seat of your emotion, but scientists discovered it ‘merely’ pumped around your blood to deliver oxygen to all your organs, including your brain, which actually handled all your emotions, hormones, thoughts, the whole deal. You thinking you’d fail that test, happened all in that ugly head of yours… if you had been someone else.

But truth was as it turned out that you functioned very differently from other people. The pseudo talk about how the heart and all that worked according to those people in the past? Turns out that’s really how people work. Well, people like you.

However, when placed in the real world that had long depended on funding technology and research to allow for progress, the scientific world was skeptical about this claim which they thought had died long ago in the Middle Ages and found it now resurfacing troubling to say the least. So far, no direct evidence has been offered for this alternate anatomical system some humans said they had, nor the feats of bravery or treachery it supposedly allowed them to perform. Yet, a growing number believed in this alternate anatomical system and the underlying principles and beliefs that could unlock its potential.

A new belief system was soon formed in a rural area somewhere in Greece, eventually expanding its influence to every continent on the globe: NewMyth. Its rapid expansion is attributed to its leaders and disciples ‘identifying’ more people who have the alternate anatomical system every day as its divisions and private communes settle near your own town. Skeptics called the people adapting the NewMyth belief mentally unstable at first, but as NewMyth’s followers dramatically rose in numbers and influence, few dare provoke them.

‘Normal’ people grew weary of this superstitious folk, as they create new stories about the gods they worship and the morals they hold their believers to, which are as varied as the mythologies of the world; Greek, Egyptian, Norse, Indian, Chinese, Japanese; though their mythology is grounded in the realities of the present day and its focus is on technology, capitalism and democracy.

For example, in this day and age, there aren’t any gods of thunder and lightning, nature or wisdom. Instead, there are the gods of architecture, metallurgy, genetic manipulation, wealth, communication, community, robotics, cybernetics, quantum physics, energy and their disciples. The list goes on and on as more people from different backgrounds add to NewMyth’s belief system and mythology.

Heroes, which are chosen amongst those with the NewMyth anatomical system, then receive weapons from these divine artisans or priests, which doesn’t sit well with the police force, but any conflicts among NewMyth are an entirely internal matter, provoking disproportionate violence, protest and rioting in the streets when the government tries to interfere in the NewMyth communes.

When there are those that use these weapons to rob banks, the police force and even the army are called in, but even though the ‘villains’ don’t fall under NewMyth and are branded as heretics, it doesn’t mean they can be stopped that easily, as the artisans of NewMyth have developed highly experimental technology inspired by their belief, which can harm anyone including the user, deflect bullets, punch through walls, depending on the weapon type and modifications.

You are one of the people of this world, be it a Newmyth Hero, a Villainous Heretic, a ‘normal’ soldier, policeman or volunteer or an ordinary citizen getting caught up in the turmoil of this strange world. You might make friends or enemies and acquire skills, gifts and weapons from the group you ally yourself with, or you only fight for yourself and your friends. In the beginning, you are allowed to make 1-3 characters, but they have to be fully described in a separate, well-made sign-up each. Note: everyone is a human, with their possible alternate anatomical system remaining unproven by science. ‘Signs’ or things that skeptics would call luck are allowed, divine miracles are not.

    Sign-up:

Name: First and last name; nicknames are allowed. Don’t go overboard, make it in line with your background. Godly children of the Third Realm aren’t allowed.

Role: as described above: Newmyth Hero, a Villainous Heretic, a ‘normal’ soldier, policeman or volunteer or an ordinary citizen.
If you don’t want to ally with anyone and you just get your hands on a weapon or a skillful friend (who needs describing as well), call yourself Neutral, Freelancer or something, depending on how active you are in picking sides or avoiding having to do that. Describe how you got the role or chose the role in the other parts, specifically History.

    Age: appropriate for your role.

    Gender: Male or female.

Description and skills: Appropriate for your role, though everyone is a normal human (there can’t be any undisputable evidence for NewMyth’s beliefs, like another set of arms and wings). If you’re from NewMyth, make your clothes and gear fit with both the modern age (be sure to include plausible technological protection against normal people’s weaponry), its mythology and your role. For example, Heroes wearing Body armor instead of chestplates. Some details are optimal, preferably no lengthy paragraphs. Describing skills with not too many specifics can set it up as handy things to use without it being too obvious and expected.

Weapons and equipment: Experimental, but not too powerful technology for NewMyth, safer and slightly less advanced and more practical technology for people not being from NewMyth.

Personality: Don’t make your character too perfect, but no too flawed either.

History: Not too long, but also not too short.

I’ll put my own sign-up here to already give people an idea of a NewMyth Hero.

    Name: Ajax Sinclair

    Role: Newmyth Hero

    Age: 17.

    Gender: Male.

Description and skills: Ajax wears standard made grey body armor (chest piece, shoulders, arms and legs) that protects his whole body against most harm, over his black T-shirt and green trousers which aren’t that visible under all that protection. He wears a dark blue helmet with a magnetic shield which deflects most bullets and a belt to hang all his stuff on. He specialized himself in locating and tracking anything in the vicinity and received all kinds of stuff from his parents to do so. He is however also trained in basic unarmed and armed combat and he uses his smarts to cover his weaknesses or think up solutions to pressing matters.

Weapons and equipment: Ajax has a high-tech monocle with a handle for his ear that fits in front of his eye and helps him identify and analyze his surroundings. It has a memory box connected to it which he carries on his belt at all times. His primary weapon for defending himself is a power cell claw which is able to recharge itself if exposed to a convertible type of energy like sunlight or plugged into the electrical grid. The claw can be used to ward off attacks, but finds the most use in cutting through the toughest of materials.

Personality: Ajax fully believes in the NewMyth beliefs that his parents taught him since birth and is quite loyal to them and any NewMyth follower, especially the leadership of his local commune, New Athens. He is honored to be chosen as a hero and will do anything to protect his beliefs and his commune against the Heretics and the envious non-believers. He can be quite naďve, as he has never known anything but NewMyth and is a bit too trustworthy of people he meets. The only reason he would be hostile towards anyone is if they ‘perverted’ the use of NewMyth technology.

History: As stated, Ajax was born and grew up in the NewMyth commune of New Athens and lived there all his life. His father is a brilliant engineer who thought Ajax everything he knows about the divine NewMyth technology and his mother is one of the highest priests of the commune, teaching her only son everything honorable about their beliefs. Everyone is a friend in the commune they say and Ajax wholeheartedly believes this and so isn’t that close with anyone in particular. He yet has to make a name for himself as a Hero of his people, though people respect his technical expertise, though it’s unsure this is because of his parents’ stature or the rules of the commune concerning treating people with politeness and being helpful regardless of how likable they are.

This looks really interesting. I'll work on a character or two.

Does it matter where the character lives?

Not really, though if we want to have our RP characters interacting from time to time, it'd probably be best if they weren't too far apart from each other. Separate stories are also an option, with some characters doing stuff close to the Los Angeles NewMyth Commune and others near Brussels^^ You could have your own characters be close to one another or part of the same group (or opposing each other) or they might each have separate stories in different places^^ It's a pretty open world concept, I think.
