    Memorization, essentially.

    Battle enough and use them enough, and they become second nature, really.

    I agree. You just have to play the game, and you eventually develop the ability to remember all type advantages/disadvantages, especially if you continuously lose, lol

    Yeah, I just memorize everything and when I realize I've made a mistake I relearn it properly.

    Well I know most off by heart but I do stuff a bit like you.
    Fire-> Ice (Melts ice)
    Fire-> Steel (Melts and breaks some machines)
    Bug->Grass(Eats grass/plants)
    Rock->Ice(Smashes Ice)
    Water->Fire(Puts out the flame on them)
    And so on. But mostly I know them off by heart.

    It's all in the years and years of playing that it becomes second nature.

    At first I actually had a chart that showed what was effective against what. I eventually figured it out from pure memory and repetition. I still forget a few sometimes though (especially dark and psychic for some reason).

    Memorisation, but specifically of the cases where the damage multiplier is not 1 (i.e. where the attacking type deals neutral damage to the defending type). No point in explicitly memorising all the cases where the damage multiplier IS 1.

    I'm the same way. The way Psychic/Dark/Fighting/Ghost react to each other always throws me off.

    I pretty much memorized them too. Really it's like an upgraded version of rock paper scissors.

    Memory basically and repitition also. I've been playing for six years now on my birthday so I've pretty much committed it to memory. Of course I had no idea expect for obvious ones like water being super effective on fire when I first started XD.

    Indeed, like quite a few of the others, it is second nature to me. It comes on instinct (I have been interested in Pokemon since I was 3, after all.) and I usually know the Types of each Pokemon too.

    I have officially claimed Mew (Pokemon), Poo (EarthBound) and EarthBound itself.

    Trial and error. I actually never bothered to learn what type is effective against what. But I'll figure it out eventually now that I've regained my interest in Pokemon again.

    Constant experience from playing the games, and common sense gave me an idea how type advantages and disadvantages work.

    When I first started playing pokemon I used a type chart that was in the back of my pokemon guide book.

    But yeah, like everyone said its really just memory.

    I don't know...

    I guess I just remembered everything when competitive battling, and it just stuck.

    I use logic for most of 'em. (Water beats Fire, Fire beats Grass, etc.) When the type doesn't use logic for super effective-ness though, I gotta think of something else. For Fighting, I think of the Regis + Dark; for Psychic I think of fears; etc., etc.
    ^ at least, that's what I did when I was younger. I don't really have to think about it any more...

    Be a little while before I get used to everything with the fairy type, but until now I've gone with old fashioned 15yrs worth of embedding them into my brain.

    Memorization, of course. But I also applied a bit of logic to it as well to help me memorize it, and with help from online sources that explained things pretty well enough for me to understand. Like according to what I found on the web (I think TV Tropes, meaning it's most likely just a guess) the reason why Psychics are weak against Dark and Bug is because it affects them mentally--it plays on phobias. Meanwhile, Steel is weak against Fire and Fighting because with Fire, it heats up to the point it could melt under extremely high temperature, and a strong fighting technique can leave a nasty dent.

    Now when it came to Fighting being weak against Flying, there's this from Awkward Zombie: "Have you ever punched a bird?"

    Some other type advantages are logical, too. I'll never forget the day in Physical Science when the teacher gave us piles of sand, and she told us to put it on an acid to neutralize it. All of a sudden, it made sense why Ground is Super Effective against Poison. I think Psychic is super-effective against Poison might be an elaboration of placebos, or how the immune system fights off disease.

    Psychic's weaknesses are common fears- Ghost, Dark, Bugs. Bug is effective against Dark since insects thrive in the dark.

    I don't know much about Fairy-type (as it is new and when it was a rumor, I didn't believe it), so I don't know why it has an advantage over Dragon (other than to balance the type chart)
