Well, I've tried playing W2 with my main team being Watchog, Audino, Boldore (haven't had anyone to trade him with), Unfezant, Basculin, and Emolga. I got knocked out a lot by major trainers and my Pokemon kept getting knocked out in long routes or caves (the Chargestone Cave, for example), but it was intensely challenging and kept me on my toes. Yes it's hard, but it's also pretty interesting to use Pokemon that most people wouldn't normally use.

Sadly, they were vastly demolished by the time I faced Drayden, so I began relying on stronger Pokemon in the end. But I'd like to try finishing a game with just these underwhelming Pokemon for a change.

umm? this is the XY section i fail to see any relation to XY here :O but anyway, to try to keep it XY related, i think playing with those pokemon in these games would still be easy enough.

With that severely underused team, you should REALLY turn the Exp. Share on for them.

I battled Valerie yesterday and unsurprisingly, she wasn't much of a challenge. I blame the Exp. Share item for making my Pokemon a bit too strong; I didn't even have to train before battling her. I just went into the Gym and beat her like it was just another match. I've turned off the Exp. Share to make things a bit more challenging though. Anyway, after seeing Laverre City and how historic it looks, then reading Valerie's Gym Leader title, I'm convinced that she's from Ecruteak City.

Some of the gym leaders should have bigger roles. I feel like Valerie, Ramos and Olympia were just too out of the story, you just og in, beat them and never hear about them again. And I agree, Charmed. The Exp Share does simplefy Things. Even though personally I like having the upper hand when it comes to Levels.

I was slaughtered by Elite Four Wikstrom earlier today.. I have no idea how it happened. lol

As soon as I got the EXP. Share, I turned it off and am still way overpowered. I have OHKOed every gym leader's pokemon and I am just playing through the game normally, no grinding or leveling up other than what happens naturally. three pokemon on my team right now are delphox, talonflame, and floette.

I remember in diamond how long it would take me to beat the gyms and I feel like I am just flying through this game.

I fail to see how any of that could be fun in any way.

You don't see how people might enjoy using weaker Pokemon for a challenge?
It's not like they're entirely useless.

In terms of design and character, I really liked Viola, Grant, Korrina, Clemont (though mainly due to how Bonnie guides you though the gym), Valerie and Wikstrom. To me everyone else felt dull and I can barely remember their names, let alone what they look like.

In terms of actual teams though, I find myself shaking my head. Viola was fine for the first gym leader. Grant's team was cool (helped largely by the fact that, for the first time in history, a rock type gym leader wasn't using a member of the Geodude family!). Korrina was okay, but once again the designers of the games find it necessary to lump the fighting type trainer with a member the Machop family, which I found highly disappointing.

Ramos' team was nothing special, with only Gogoat being in any way significant. Clemont's team was okay, but I'm getting fed up with seeing Magneton thrown out by Gym Leaders, be they electric or steel specialists.

Valerie's team was fun to face, mostly due to it being made up of the new fairy types. Even the two old faces she made use of were not of the over-used sort.

Olymia's team was a bit more interesting than some others, and Wulfric's team was... icy. That's about all that can be said.

As for the elite four, although I liked Wikistrom's design, his team made me wonder. How many times have we seen Scizor now? And Klefki - why was that thing there? At least Aegislash presented a bit of a challenge and Probopass's Sturdy ability allowed him to almost take out my Charizard.

Malva was okay, although I did wonder at the presence of Torkoal on her team. Same goes for Drasna and her Altaria. I think Iris is the only Dragon-Type specialist who has never made use of an Altaria at some point. As for Siebold - two pokemon with double weaknesses, one them a Gyarados. Seriously, game makers, Gyarados isn't as awesome as some make out. Give some other water type a chance!

Diantha I liked. Her team was nice and varied, with Mega-Gardevoir being a nice addition. I did wonder at Hawlucha's inclusion, but then Cynthia had pokemon that made me scratch my head at their inclusion (Roserade and Gastrodon) so I guess that's just how it works. And as a Champion she was on par with Cynthia, Blue and even Red in that you had to think when you challenged her, rather than send in Lapras and hit the Ice Beam button over and over again.

My biggest gripe though, is how small the teams are. Admittedly this has been a problem for a while, but why the drop in the number of pokemon owned by the elite four? Were people complaining that they were too hard to defeat with five pokemon each because, news flash, they were meant to be! They are the elite four, supposedly the four best trainers out there aside from the champion (and you, once you've pulverised them!) The more pokemon they have the more I like them because they are harder to beat, with better chances of taking you out. At the very least they should have expanded teams when you go for a rematch, but we didn't even get that!

The same could be said of the Gym Leaders- why are they stuck with only three pokemon now?

I've always felt that all these guys should present a challenge. To me, in this generation, they didn't.

Not like they can happen now, but a few little ways it would have been nice to have the Gym Leaders outside of their Gyms.

    - Viola: Appearing outside of her Gym with her sister Alexa every now at landmarks. Shalour City, Genosenge Town, Anistar City etc. Speaking to you about your journey possibly talking to you about Team Flare when it gets to that point of the storyline.
    - Grant: Appearing in caves around Kalos, possibly during the Team Flare battle in Glittering Cave talking to you about Team Flare (Possible activity in his town)
    - Korrina: Pretty good in the Mega Evolution parts, but maybe appears later in the storyline when the player heads to Genosenge Town to take on Lysandre maybe, even talking to you about Lucario and possibly furthering yourself in the Mega Evolution research or when your Mega Ring is updated in Anistar City.
    - Ramos: Not sure, maybe around the Gardens in Parfum Palace/Route 4 helping gardening, possibly someone who keeps the gardens tidy.
    - Clemont: In and around Lumiose City, possibly the Power Plant hinting to you why everywhere is closed. Pokéball Factory too keeping up the machines there.
    - Valerie: PR Video Studio and in and around different boutiques talking to you about your fashion. Possibly giving you unique or rare designed clothing after the League or something.
    - Olympia: Not sure, maybe around Boutique's too or possibly the Hotels.
    - Wulfric: Had a good little bit in the Pokémon Village; maybe more in the snowy areas, possibly in the Frost Cavern.

Also, because Team Flare is filled with people whom bought their way into the team, maybe one or two of the Gym Leaders revealing they were asked to give money to join, or possibly someone they know joined Team Flare.

I think the best way to make the game hard is to either:

    1. Get a full team of 6 as early as humanly possible. I got 6 pokemon after I caught Snorlax. I did drop Litleo when I got Tyrunt and eventually dropped Raichu to make way for Rotom. Either way, spreading exp between all those team members keeps your levels low.

    2. Don't use Pokemon-Amie. I tried doing it with only 1 Heart on Amie, and I quickly hit a wall around Route 10/Glittering Cave. XY are actually designed with Pokemon-Amie's EXP boosts in mind, and the game will definitely get harder without them.

The same could be said of the Gym Leaders- why are they stuck with only three pokemon now?
I'd really like to know this. The pokemon choices can be fantastic and challenging, but the amount of pokemon really hampers challenge. Granted, some pokemon on my team aren't suitable for a gym, but the extra turn I get by sending them out can be used as a sacrifice for another, so even that gives me an advantage just via sheer numbers. In order to truly threaten having my whole team fainted, I need to be facing a whole team.

Yeah, same. I actually turned it off after my Noibat hit the same levels as my other Pokemon...still like 10 levels higher than the Elite Four.

Though I disagree with what you said Diamond/Pearl. I started a new file recently and, outside of the first few battles, the game has been a total breeze. Much like SoulSilver. Though because of this, I find myself underleveled in those titles, hahahahaha.

Finally got around to beating Wulfric today. Underwhelming. Abomasnow was actually a pretty strong wall that could fire off auto-freezing Ice Beams (or at least it seemed that way.) Cryogonal got OHKO'd by my Gogoat. I actually tried to get Avalugg to attack me to see how strong it was but all it did was cursed itself. Mystic Fire away.

Based on strength, I would rank them:

Grant (lost twice) > Olympia (lost once) > Korrina > Wulfric > Clemont > Ramos > Valerie > Viola

No, I mean all of those things in combination together.

Like, I've used weak Pokemon and it's tons of fun, but not without other elements that both make the game easier and more fun. Doing all of that is like masochism imo.

I can't be the only person that thinks that the E4 and Gym Leaders weren't particularly memorable. If you asked me about any one of them now, the only one I would be able to tell you about would be E4 Drasna, with her Dragon-type Pokémon. Even she wasn't particularly memorable, but she was nice. She was the only one out of the E4 that gave me any real trouble. Turned out I had raised my Pokémon about ten levels too high (thanks to the new and improved Exp. Share) and pretty much one-hit killed all of the E4's Pokémon -.-

As for Gym leaders... I don't really remember a single one. Not even the name of the one that gives you the Lucario. Before, some of the Gym Leaders and E4 would have a role in the storyline... but in this game they didn't seem to (except the Gym Leader that gives you the Lucario, and I don't remember her name because I am a forgetful muppet and on most days forget my own name, haha).

But yes, out of all of the Gym Leaders and E4, my favourite was Drasna. Dragon-type Pokémon = problems for me, but it does mean I got to use my Mamo against every single one

Stick with the Battle Chateau and you'll be knowing their names soon enough. You may come to a phase of calling them "People to beat for Cash" and "People to beat for More Cash", but sooner or later you'll recognize them by name.

Well, I don't even have the Games yet and I know all their Names, Types, and Pokémon they use, so I guess it just all depends on memory and how much you know about it all. :P

Oh they're there. Announce the right kinds of writs and you'll be raking 75k to 100k per fight with Amulet Coin and Money O-Power from the Elite Four. The Gym Leaders are in a slightly lower bracket. I find them very often now, I'm at 9M right now because of them.

Yep, that's the one. And that's exactly why I like her...

On another note, I hate that everyone uses that Water type E4 guy as their PSS icon... it's quite annoying.

If you mean her looks, I plainly don't like her, although there are other people such as Valerie, Ice, Aaron, etc. who I do like, which can be veiwed as odd.
