There's nothing wrong with regular trainers, Gym leaders, Elite Four and Champions having starter Pokémon. I think it would have really neat to see some of the more important trainers of Kalos having some of the starters as I really think some of them fitted them better than the current Pokémon they use (Looking at you, Olympia.....). Didn't stop them doing it in previous generations, so why stop now? They should start doing this again as I feel it would really add more diversity in the in-game trainers.
Honestly, the only in-game character that I was disappointed in was Ramos. I thought Quilladin would have been decent on his team, seeing as it looks like it's based off a seed and the theme of the gym was a giant tree.
Malva and Olympia having Delphox would've been weird imo…

Maybe they don't want a sinister themed gym? Idk lol I'm just guessing at this point. Though I really do want to know what is keeping them from having a Dark-Type Gym? I would say because of limited amount Dark type Pokemon? but then again that's never stopped them before. They made a Dragon Champion when only 2 Dragon type families existed at that point.

What's even more odd about it is that they've had 3 Dark type Elite 4 members, but never any Dark type gym leaders. They're clearly not against Dark type specialists, but for some reason, they are against Dark type gym leaders. Next time there's a Q&A/interview, someone should ask them about this, it's really odd.

Why do I have a feeling that either they will totally disregard the question when asked or come up with some convoluted excuse? lol can't wait.

That was fine. I thought the punk attribute of Flint complemented Infernape's dex entries well (or vice versa).

Delphox doesn't look like the hotheaded or irate type that Malva is.
Olympia might have been good with Delphox, but neither of Delphox's Dex entries mention the fox to be mystical like the gym or its Leader. Olympia never discussed seeing into the future, just mentioned the protagonist's future.

what exactly is the difference between foresight and fortune-telling

that would actually make like a ton of sense to give Olympia a Delphox

no not only you most of us think its that way, although i don't even know the reason why they made the elite 4 easy to beat.

I think Ramos would have been great if he had Quilladin.

I can agree that Malva wouldn't suit Delphox, but Olympia would have been perfect with one for reasons Excitable Boy quoted before me. Heck, even Malamar would have been better than Meowstic IMO. This was one big reason I was disappointed with Olympia, as Meowstic really doesn't suit her at all I think.

I don't think it doesn't suit her, but I think it's a pretty bland Pokemon to have as the ace of the seventh leader. Malamar would have provided more of a challenge, but I guess it was already Xerosic's ace.

My main problem with Wulfric was that he was the last Gym leader, because Ice is really not that challenging of a type. Common weakness and lack of resistances made his Pokemon pretty easy to take down by that point in the game, especially because he had two pure Ice types.

Well that's because of 2 reasons:
    1) lack of Fire types overall in Sinnoh
    2) in Sinnoh, it's "okay" for random NPC trainers to use starters.

Elaborating more on #2, in the Kanto and Sinnoh games, there's some random NPC trainers that use the regional starter Pokemon, unlike other games (and the Johto games seems to "ban" Trainers having Johto starters but not Kanto starters)

I'm guessing they chose Meowstic as Olympia's main by process of elimination. Delphox would've been great, but I'm guessing they didn't give her one because your rivals would already have it as their main. And Malamar doesn't really fit Olympia's mystic theme, so he wouldn't be a good fit either. Which leaves her only one 6th gen option, Meowstic. It's disappointing, but then that's what happens when you have so few new Pokemon. I know I wouldn't choose some of those Pokemon as mains if I was designing the gyms.

Well they could have given her a pass gen Psychic Pokemon as her main. It's not like they haven't done that before. To be quite honest I just don't see the Delphox connection. Delphox seems to be based off of a classic witch while Olympia reminds me of one of those fortunetellers you see at carnivals. lol

They usually don't like doing that anymore. Last time they did that was with Juan in Emerald. Besides, it defeats the purpose of promoting the new Pokemon.

While im usually neutral about the elite four members (none have been super memorable to me besides the originals, mainly Lance), I gotta say I was pleasantly surprised at X and Y's group. While I felt Malva was a little cliche (a hotheaded fire trainer I feel we've had before a couple of times), Wikstrom fit perfectly with the addition of Aegislash and I liked that Drasna was not just an "epic, cape-clad figure" like Lance, Clair, or Drake. Siebold was interesting, although im not sure what exactly he was supposed to be (he talks about art, but I swore he also mentioned something about cooking, so is he a chef or just someone who appreciates art in all forms?) As for pokemon choices, I would have liked to see the elite four have a few more pokemon that have "counters" to one or more of their weaknesses (the only ones that really stood out to me were aegislash and dragalge), but otherwise I was satisfied.

Melva is more of a lioness than a hothead

Despite their weakness the gym leaders and elite four were well matched to their signature pokemon

I suppose that is true, that would explain pyroar being her main Pokemon. And yes their signature pokemon definitely fit each of them quite well.

I'd be more worried about why Wilkstrom has a star stuck to his forehead.

It's not skin colored, it's clearly white while his skin is, like, beige

you can even sort of make out the connecting portion of his beard on the chin
