    Time for the next Pokémon of the Week and this week it spat out another classic



    It's Snorlax, the classic Pokémon that can be found again in Kalos. It's capable of quite a lot and is a tremendous tank.

    Brave nature

    Maximize the attack and then just crush them all. I think rest is better then counter so you can return Snorlax to full health. And about the attacking move...i really don't know with which to go with.
    Genral tactic is to belly drum then rest and then sleep talk to attack

    Nature depends on preference: Adamant if you want more power and Careful if you want more bulk.
    Attack move also depends on preference: Return packs more of a punch, while Body Slam has the useful Paralyze chance.

    Snorlax also has other options when it comes to offense, such as Crunch, Superpower, Zen Headbutt, Earthquake, Rock Slide, Wild Charge, Seed Bomb, Outrage and the Elemental Punches

    Careful Nature

    - Whirlwind / Crunch

    I use this set in the pre-pokebank meta. Great switch-in to a lot of special attackers such as Greninja and Gengar. Resttalk is also a lot more reliable with the new sleep mechanics. Hazard support is appreciated when using Whirlwind.

    Hyper beam coming off base 65 SpAtk isn't going to hurt anything, and with that recharge time, it's REALLY not worth it. Also, belly drum doesn't boost it.

    Standard Snorlax. Attack, be tanky, switch or predict physical hitters and then switch. Curse, Counter and Stockpile or decent moves to help deal with this pitiful defense, and I've scored a few kills in my day with counter.

    Other Options for above
    -Ice/ThunderPunch:Hits some stuff, but much of it is killed by return
    -Double-Edge: Don't use unless resto-chesto.
    -Avalanche: A cool ice punch replacement, but ice punch didn't help much in the first place so…'
    -Focus Punch: Cool, but gimmicky.

    This set. I won with it once, but showdown didn't let me save the replay D;
    If you don't know how defense curl and rollout works, if you use defense curl and then rollout, the power is doubled. And because Rollout's Power is doubled each turn…. Its power is immense. It only works in UU.. but how does it hold up?

    After running some calcs, if your lucky enough to get to the 5th hit, with defense curl, after one spike, with 1 boost i attack, you will OHKO registeel. And quagsire with unaware. Skarm and T-tar die in 3 hits with one boost and hazards.

    Well, well, well...our "tons o' fun" friend is back and still in prime form. Pretty much the same as before with a few new toys. It now gets Belch, Power-Up Punch, and Confide (not that you'd use them, but they're new options) and Heavy Slam is now a viable option it can use against Fairy Types (especially with that high weight). Looking back at the 5th Gen PotW Snorlax, much of that still stands true now. However, the balance has shifted - Whimsicott is very vulnerable to Heavy Slam, many of Snorlax's counters and checks have more counters and checks themselves now, and many new Items like Weakness Policy and Assault Vest are at our disposal.

    Snorlax the premier bulky sponge. A reliable pokemon in the main game, Snorlax has fallen by the wayside in recent years with the plethora of Fighting Pokemon.

    Typing: Hard to go wrong with mono normal. 1 Weakness in exchange for 1 Immunity is always nice, although the amount of stuff that hits you for neutral damage does hurt. Snorlax is not as spongy as Chansey. The problem is that many things carry fighting moves and with the advent of Focus Blast, Snorlax’s job has been very hard.
    Mono normal STAB has huge neutral coverage, but due to its well-known resistances (Ghost, Rock and Steel), it makes any aspiring sweeper’s coverage moves fairly easy to predict. And due to its typing its exposed to entry hazards (though frankly, everything is).

    Stats: Snorlax is the definition of bulky sweeper. 160 HP and 110 SDEF emphasize sponginess while 110 ATK allows Snorlax to make pancakes out of everything. Unfortunately, after this is where Snorlax starts rolling downhill. While base 65 SATK is negligible and base 30 SPD terrifying in a Trick room environment, base 65 defense hurts a lot. Being weak to fighting, one of the most physically offensive types in the game, paints a huge bullseye on the big stomach pokemon.

    Moves: The proper moves can salvage this situation, but the generational shift has not been kind to Snorlax. Many of its versatility in its physical moveset came from games past. The Elemental Punches, Outrage, Seed Bomb and Superpower are moves lost in the generational shift. After these moves, Snorlax’s physical movepool is still fairly healthy; aside from Normal STABs like Return and Body Slam, Snorlax has access to Earthquake, Heavy Slam, Wild Charge, Rock Slide, Crunch and Pursuit. Boosting moves like Powerup Punch, Curse and the gimmicky Belly Drum can turn Snorlax into a terrifying offensive force. While Snorlax has several decent options in support moves, it is sorely missing what its defensive cohort Chansey has; a recovery move. Rest, especially after Gen V, has become a bigger double edged sword than ever before, and cannot realistically be relied upon, outside of a luck based Sleep Talk set. Aside from this want of a recovery move, Snorlax’s support movepool is fairy vast, including moves such as Screech, Stockpile/Swallow, Substitute, Weather moves, Yawn and Screech. Counter deserves a special mention, due to it being a great move to play mind games with opponents and partially covering Snorlax’s biggest weakness.

    Ability: Snorlax has two pretty decent abilities to choose from. Thick Fat gives Snorlax two desperately needed resistances and from rather offensive types as well. Immunity on the other hand, protects Snorlax from poison, a rather common status due to the prevalence of Toxic and the possibility of Toxic Spikes. While you will get a lot more mileage out of Thick Fat, Immunity has enough benefits that it can’t be discounted.

    The Verdict: The guy that just keeps on going and… he’s asleep. Snorlax is a victim of the times. A great pokemon for the first 3 generations, it has barely changed since, picking up one or two new things, but essentially remaining the same as the game evolves. Snorlax has potential, but needs team support while it sleeps off its last fight.
    I was once routed by a Gengar who critted 4 times in a row on my team. Morale of the story; Crits happen and Sucker Punch is good Gengar repellent.

    -Wild Charge/Rock Slide/Brick Break/Earthquake

    Snorlax can be used as a sweeper on a Trick Room team, Belly Drum maximize his attack and Sitrus Berry heals him, but you can use Curse with leftovers instead, Return has 102 base power and Crunch is used for Ghosts Types, the last move slot goes for what you need: Wild Charge for Water and Flyings types, Rock Slide hits Ice,Fire,Ice and Flyings too,Brick Break for Tyranitar an Bisharp that resists Crunch and his STABs and the classic Earthquake those two and Poison,Fire and Electrics

    This is my first time posting here so feel fre to correct me on anything

    Ahh, Snorlax. Our fat little friend has had a rocky history. In Gen 1, Snorlax was one of the better Pokemon in the metagame. It had versatility to it and the coveted Amnesia, which doubled its Special stat. Generation 2 crowned Snorlax with the title of most influential Pokemon in any metagame ever. Every team that wasn't a joke team had Snorlax on it. After that, Snorlax slowly declined into UU. However, with Fighting not being as dominant and the introduction of the Assault Vest, I believe Snorlax can finally shine once again.

    Pros:
    - Gargantuan base HP and solid Attack and Special Defense
    - Thick Fat gives it resistance to Fire and Ice attacks
    - Solid movepool that gives it access to many potent moves

    Cons:
    - Subpar Defense means it can't tank too many physical hits
    - Really, really slow
    - No reliable recovery moves

    With an Assault Vest, Snorlax is able to switch in and Pursuit trap many of the tier's premier Special attackers such as Mega Gengar and Mega Alakazam.

    252+ SpA Mega Alakazam Focus Blast vs. 0 HP / 200 SpD Assault Vest Snorlax: 186-220 (40.3 - 47.7%)

    252+ SpA Mega Mewtwo Y Aura Sphere vs. 0 HP / 200 SpD Assault Vest Snorlax: 136-160 (29.5 - 34.7%)

    Assault Vest Snorlax, as you can see, is a monster.


    252+ Atk Snorlax Pursuit (switching out) vs. 36 HP / 0 Def Mega Gengar: 206-244 (76.2 - 90.3%)

    252+ Atk Snorlax Pursuit (switching out) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Mega Alakazam: 242-286 (96.4 - 113.9%)

    If they switch out, they get wrecked. Mega Gengar is almost always OHKOd by Earthquake if it stays in, so that's a no-no.

    No. Let's not start with Belly Drum again. We already had far too much of it last week. Part of Snorlax's claim to fame is its supreme special bulk due to its high HP and special defense. By cutting Snorlax's HP in half, you severely compromise its bulk; considering its low speed, you'll probably take two attacks before you ever get to use that Belly Drum's attack boost, or rest, or anything, and those two attacks against a half health Snorlax can often be enough to KO it. Not to mention that it's too slow to do anything with the attack boost anyway, assuming it does survive.

    Say no to Belly Drum Snorlax. It's not worth the high risk.

    It also lacks any priority to circumvent the low speed. Snorlax should be delegated to a tanking role. Never use Belly Drum on Snorlax.

    Another generation has past Snorlax. On the surface.
    Snorlax did actually gain a couple things. The first is Power-up Punch. The second is Assault Vest. However, these additions, like many others in the past, are minor. These are still usable though. Snorlax will struggle to distinguish itself once again. Physical attackers have gained popularity and other normal types are becoming superior choices. Examples of superior normal types? Mega-Kangaskhan, Exploud, and Diggersby. The arrival more potent physical attackers is also a major problem for Snorlax. These include the already mentioned Mega-Kangaskhan and Diggersby. Now, add to the list, Zygarde, Mega-Lucario, Mega-Mawile, Mega-Pinsir, Mega-Heracross, Mega-Scizor, Mega-Absol, Mega-Garchomp, Mega-Tyranitar, Mega-Charizard X, Azumarill, Chesnaught, Mega-Medicham, Talonflame, Aegislash, Trevenant, a no-longer-Uber Excadrill, Scolipede, Weavile now having Icicle Crash, Muk is actually looking better, and you can see Snorlax being forced to struggle more than ever this generation. Because Snorlax didn't get anything new, it has to resort to using the classic Choice Band set or CurseLax set. Both were not making a huge splash in gen V. There is no reason that would not change one generation later.
    There is one major metagame change that did play in Snorlax's favor though: the popularity of Mega-Gengar. With the Assault Vest, Snorlax is one of the few hard counters to Mega-Gengar thanks to that special bulk and access to Pursuit. If Mega-Gengar is causing problems for you, consider adding Snorlax to your team.

    The classic set. Curse buffs Snorlax's Attack and Defense while cutting its already pathetic and useless Speed. Return and Crunch are for coverage, though Body Slam can replace Return for that nice paralysis chance. And Rest is for recovery.

    Item is for more HP recovery. Ability is for the nice resistances to Fire and Ice.

    Alternatively, Snorlax can capitalize on its nice Attack stat with an all-out attacking set. Return is for STAB, Crunch and Brick Break are for coverage, and Heavy Slam just hits hard in general, considering how heavy Snorlax is.

    Item is for boosting Snorlax's already nice Attack. Ability, yeah, yeah, yeah.


    Other options:
    *Snorlax might be able to make good use of an Assault Vest along with Power-Up Punch, though its Special Defense is already pretty good as is, and Curse is a better means of setting up.
    *Belly Drum might seem tempting, but not so much when you consider how much Snorlax relies on its bulk, plus its distinct lack of priority moves with which to abuse it. Nice try, folks, but Snorlax can't pull an Azumarill here.
    *The CurseLax set can work with Sleep Talk in place of one of the attacking moves, though you'd need to be sure the move you don't replace is something that nothing is immune to, because it's not like you'll have any other options.

    Abilities:
    *Thick Fat: Snorlax only takes half the usual damage from Fire and Ice-type moves. The Ability of choice for a Snorlax- added resistances are always welcome.
    *Immunity: Snorlax can't be poisoned. Useful, but since Rest can be found on any Snorlax that isn't running a Choice Band, and the status of choice against ChoiceLax is burn in any case, it's... not really worth the while.
    *Gluttony: Snorlax's Hidden Ability. Snorlax will consume stat-boosting berries when its HP hits 50%, rather than 25%. It might be useful if Snorlax ever actually used those kinds of berries. Which it does not.

    Partners:
    Special attackers in general, because Snorlax isn't gonna be muscling past any decent physical walls any time soon. Wishpassers and Aromatherapy/Heal Bell users might also be a good idea to help out the variants that don't carry Rest (that is to say, Choice Band or Assault Vest holders).

    Counters:
    Aegislash can come in on Return, Body Slam, and Brick Break with no trouble, and Sacred Sword ignores the Curse boosts, in addition to being super effective, so yeah. Physical walls in general, such as Skarmory, are also a good bet. Also, while not strictly a counter, anything that can force Snorlax to switch out (Roar, Whirlwind, Dragon Tail, Circle Throw, and even Perish Song, to an extent), and thus throw away them Curse boosts, that's a decent idea as well.

    Opinion:
    I've always liked Snorlax, personally. Still just as cool now as it was back then.

    The classic is still the best!
    This thing can tank 2/3 hits from mega mewtwo's focus blasts. Laugh in the face of fire and ice moves as they don't hurt you at all. Status moves are rendered useless as rest will cure all!
    (haha guy above me posted right when I started typing mine xD)

    Pros:
    Special Wall even to super effective moves
    Stalls almost all special Sweepers
    Max Curse = unstoppable

    Cons:
    Never wins speed fights. Ever
    Needs at least 2 curses before he can tank physicaly
    Easily counter walled/setup on
    Can't physical without curse stacks

    Snorlax is best for a free switch in to save another pokemon from a special attack. You need to make sure their physical sweepers are either lacking a fighting move or dead or snorlax won't be doing much.
    Body Slam is preferred over return for the utility of paralyze.

    I've been using snorlax since I caught him in X. Snorlax has always been a favorite of mine. The bellydrum build is a super fun gimmick too, if only he wasn't so slow xD

    Snorlax..I will never understand why your special attack movepool is so good.
    Overview: Snorlax is probably one of the more stereotypical Normal Types out there, with great Special Defense and HP. Snorlax also benefits from decent attack, and combined with trick room and 30 Speed this thing can be fairly dangerous in a trick room setting.
    Snorlax however has a fair share of weaknesses, including a massive weakness to physical fighting types, and physical sweepers in general.

    The Curse of Eternal Sluggishness
    Snorlax @ Leftovers/Life Orb
    Ability: Thick Fat | Nature: Adamant
    Evs: 252 HP/ 252 Atk /4 SpD

    - Rest/Earthquake
    Probably the Prime Snorlax set you will see, Snorlax benefits greatly from Curse as it is basically a free Attack and Defense boost, allowing Snorlax to be a tad bulkier and do some considerable damage. In a trick room setting it's even better! Basically use the most effective moves, and use curse when there are opportunities. Rest is there for healing (recommended if you're running life orb) and Earthquake is for hitting stuff that Return or Body Slam can't. Pretty simple really.

    Really gimmicky set (Don't kill me for this one) but Munchlax with Eviolite is a pretty good Special Wall. 475 HP and almost 450 Special Defense isn't too shabby! The only problem is his defense is next to nothing and he can't outspeed a slug. Oh well, trick room potential I guess. Stockpile and Amnesia are defensive moves, with Stockpile giving you some defense and Amnesia going all out for Special Defense, boosting his bulk even higher. Belly Drum is somewhat of an option with a couple amnesias/stockpiles, but Toxic is a bit more reliable and doesn't put Munchlax at risk. Body Slam is an attacking option and gives the potential for paralysis, which is pretty nice for a wall, and Rest is for healing. Once again, don't take this set too seriously.

    Other Options: Belly Drum may seem like a good idea, but with Snorlax being so god awful slow and it's weakness to physical moves, it's not smart outside of possibly trick room. At best it's situational.
    Aside from that, Selfdestruct is a suprising move that may catch someone off guard to take out something with a life orb, and Sleep Talk sets are certainly viable.

    Counters: Pretty much anything with a powerful, Physical Fighting type move. Snorlax has mediocre physical bulk, so try and hit it's weaknesses. Skarmory can wall Snorlax fairly well, resisting Earthquake and STAB moves, but it has to watch out for Fire Punch. Status moves, particularly burns (Pokemon with thick fat can still be burned, right?) also hurt Snorlax pretty bad.

    Overall Snorlax is a decent Normal Type at best that has really suffered over time with many counters popping up. Still, Snorlax can be useful in some situations, but it's not a great choice by any stretch of the imagination.

    I've never been a huge fan of Snorlax. I much prefer Miltank for a mono-Normal Curse sweeper. Still, Snorlax has its uses.

    This set is a gimmicky Stockpile set. Build up your defenses and when low on health Swallow. Body Slam/Return are good stab, Crunch/Pursuit hurt any Ghosts who think they can stop you. If you really want to get gimmicky, you can also use Metronome instead of Body Slam or Return.

    I would prefer to use Snorlax in Double Battles, that way it can receive the support that it needs due to it's low Def and Spd. Snorlax is my favorite Pokemon and I've made a few in the past, the usual Curse Set and sometimes on a Trick Room team. Now in Gen VI I've decided to use a different set that works well in Double Battles.

    Snorlax @ Chesto Berry
    Ability: Thick Fat
    Nature: Impish
    EV's: 236 Hp/ 172 Def/ 100 Sp.Def
    -Rest
    -Stockpile
    -Belly Drum
    -Return/Body Slam/Crunch
    Pair Snorlax up with anything like a Follow Me Togekiss, or Dual Screener to give Snorlax support and a chance to set up. By using Stockpile Snorlax can become an incredible tank. Add Belly Drum to maximize it's Atk can make it and unstoppable Monster. Rest is used to recover and holding Chesto berry allows it to quickly wake up. With STAB Body Slam + Belly Drum most stuff is gonna get OHKO, defensive Steel-types can sponge Snorlax's Body Slam while Ghost's are immune. STAB Return can be used in place of Body Slam for more power, but you lose the chance of paralyzing your opponent. Crunch can be used instead if Snorlax is faced against Ghost-types that are immune to both Body Slam and Return. It's ability Thick-Fat is better for receiving resistance to both Fire and Ice, Immunity is good but Rest can easily remove the possible Toxic users.

    I always loved Snorlax. Even though the game passed him and Slowbro by recently, I still use them.

    Snorlax certainly hasn't gotten anything new this time. But it's fun to still use him. Especially now that he isn't expected anymore.

    Curselax and all my favourites have already been listed...so here's my stab at things.

    Awaking the Sleeping Giant
    Snorlax w/ Choice Band (Turns out, as a new member, the at sign is currently blocked for me)
    Ability: Thick Fat
    Nature: Adamant
    EVs: 252 Atk / 56 HP / 200 SpD
    - Return
    - Pursuit
    - Superpower
    - Thunder Punch/Wild Charge

    One of the biggest threats to Snorlax is its inability to take repeated hits...the game has sped up since it was dominant. Instead of tanking each shot in this set, Snorlax would instead take out single targets, getting a KO or forcing a switch. Return is Snorlax's STAB move and, while probably not going to hit a great number of Pokemon for neutral damage, can be pulled every once in a while for great effect.

    Pursuit should make Snorlax a great counter to some frail Pokemon. MegaGengar in specific would crumple to a Choice Band Pursuit and can't deal more than ~35% in retaliation (Sludge Bomb).

    Superpower allows Snorlax to it a lot of tanks and wear them down a bit.

    The last move is coverage, though it's unlikely Snorlax will find a KO there. Wild Charge could be used instead of Thunder Punch as it would more effectively check Skarmory and Tentacruels, though not enough to land a OHKO on it.

    Another option for the last slot is Earthquake, though it really doesn't improve coverage all that much. Fire Punch can also hit some targets, but not hard.

    This is what I've been using and its been surprisingly useful in its walling prowess:

    Snorlax @ Leftovers
    Ability: thick fat
    Nature: Careful
    EVs: 52 HP / 252 Def / 200 SpDef
    - Rest
    - Sleep Talk
    - Body Slam
    - Crunch / whirlwind

    The main role of this build is for Snorlax to sit there and just be...fat. Max defense to patch up its sub-par defense to tank a surprise physical hit better, 200 EVs in special defense to take advantage of its high base stat and then the rest in HP. The reasoning for only 52 in HP is that its already stupidly high and Snorlax would benefit more from boosting its defenses than trying to do a Blissey and sponging. Moveset are as follows: Rest-talking for semi-reliable recovery. Due the the change in sleep mechanics, this is now a vaiable option as long as you remember how long Snorlax has been asleep for. Means Snorlax can hang around longer and doesn't care about status. His attacking moves are Body Slam, for STAB and para chance, and Crunch. Since steels don't resist dark moves any more, this is the perfect go to option and also hits those ghosties who are immune to body slam including levitating ones.

    Snorlax does invite set-up pokes so a worthwhile investment would be whirlwind if you're terrified of them, although this is what team mates are for and I often partner up my Snorlax with Skarmory to phaze out pokes.

    A little different from other things I've seen posted. Boltbeam(ice beam and thunderbolt for those who don't know)is a combo with nearly perfect coverage, and since snorlax has terrible special attack, I decided to run a physical version. Kee berry is for boosting your defense upon taking a physical attack(love the new berries!). Rest and sleep talk is self-explanatory. I don't really do the whole “EV spread thing”, because I don't know where to place them for max efficiency. Nature is the same. If it works, use it.

    How bout i help you out here. 252 is the max EV total, and you can put it in 2 stats, so put it in attack. Then 200 in Defense for kee berry, and the lastly 54 in HP. Nature should be adamant, as your attack is prominent and you special attack sucks anyway. Also, maybe add avalanche as a replacement option for ice punch

    One final thought: doesn't having sleep talk's randomness ruin the point of perfect coverage? really, its a huge gamble, considering you have a 33% chance of what you want, a 33% chance of what you don't want, and a 33% chance of using rest.
