in all honesty it's racist to expect a culture as ancient and xenophobic as the Japanese are going to confirm to our American standards of political correctness
or here a better question, aside from appealing to a wider audience (IE profit) what the hell reason would a mangeka have to include black and or Latino or Jewish..or hell even white characters? And what gives you the right to demand..they be racially inclusive?
I'm not justifying the shenanigans of the Japanese people or anything but honestly this..attitude I'm seeing crop up with comics and manga..where American racial and cultural issues are projected into foreign stories is more than a little pretentious and arrogant,.
I'd also add PCing western comics to the point where you shoehorn a new sexual orientation into an established character..to the detriment of the story and do it in a way that smells of desperation to appear progressive and cynical profiteering is..just pathetic
CBR recently shut itself down and deleted its forum and restarted i itself down and deleted its forum and restarted it from scratch..because more than a few fans objected to a critic demanding they make half the Teen titans gay..and screw over Static to make him more "black" (when the kids one of the best examples of any minority ever written in comics..ever..which makes it just sad) it's just insane..I mean christ fiction is supposed to lift us above our problems
or to quote Gene Roddenberry "race and sexual orientation in star trek should never be at the forefront of the story because in the twenty fourth century why the hell would any of that matter?"
You have animes where female ice demons who care capable of asexual reproduction (Yukina) end up romantically paired with a man who is clearly Irish and mentally handicapped..who thinks he's Japanese..her brother's wedding present to his woman was..a sentient tree that was her father..in a universe like that.."color" and "orientation " mean jackshit their social and racial issues are going to be radically different from ours..it's almost silly to think that they should be dealing with our issues..and many times when comic and manga authors try and force our issues into those settings it makes for preposterously offensive story telling for the simple virtue of "my brothers engaged to a sex slave fire demon tree thing turned cyborg..turned heavy metal queen and I think I'm in love with someone who is completely unnecessary for my species to reproduce, ergo I shouldn't even be attracted to him in the first place"
or the trek example "I know i look like a supermodel but I've been a man a woman father, mother and grandfather..grandmother, a serial killer and a general worshipped by space vikings..also..two months ago I was a hundred and seventy year old man who died riding a hooker"
it just..in many cases..in many mangas and animes..makes zero sense for them to be racially sensitive, or inclusive..beyond "black people exist news at eleven" because it just doesn't matter in the setting..or it'd be bizarre as hell to focus on on that..when you're plot revolves around fighting sentient termites "
Never mind that Japan still has trouble admitting that trying to exterminate Chinese people for being Chinese is wrong...do you honestly think they are anywhere near ready to address..non ethnic Asians in their fiction..in any way?
Killer Bee's about as offensive as the Disney crows, his brother less so (A's a pretty awesome leader when he isn't in rage mode and he seems pretty pragmatic too which almost no Naruto character is so that makes him a cut above the rest) and we're lucky we got that out of them
