The VM system is a nifty feature that enables you to talk one-on-one with other SPPF users. It is rather self-explanatory, However, there are still the occasional questions about VMs. This guide was created in order to help you understand how to use the VM system, and how to properly report a message that may be problematic or inappropriate. Along with the creation of this VM guide, many new rules, protocols, and etiquette will be discussed. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO BE AWARE OF THESE! Many of the rules that have been added (albeit not really new) and will now be strictly enforced. These were created in order for a safe and appropriate community for every age group that uses these forums. Anybody is found breaking these will be warned or infracted. Multiple offenses may (and probably will) result in a ban.
HOW TO USE THE SYSTEMNote: Some of the images are slightly old as they were done before forum updates, but they should be similar enough that you can see what you are doing.
Everyone's profile will look something like this:
To post a message on someone's profile, you can type in the little box like so:
and when you hit post, the person's profile will now look like this:
You can tell when someone has posted on your profile through the notification system. When you have a new message, a notification will be sent to you like so:
Note that there is a different way to reply to someone. Circled here is the View Conversation link:
When you click this, you will be able to see your entire messaging history with that person:
You can then reply in a similar manner to posting directly on their profile. Please note the report button next to the View Conversation link. Take care to only press that when you actually want to report something; it sends a report email to the entire staff, so it does get a bit annoying when people press that button and send us a random message instead of a report. If someone is breaking the rules, though, do not hesitate to use that button and/or pm a staff member about it.
One unique thing about the visitor messaging system is that every user has limited moderation abilities over their own profile. First off, you can set your VM page to friends/moderators only, which means that only people who are in your friends list or are moderators can see your page and post VMs to your profile. This can be done in your Settings. In addition, you can soft-delete messages on your own profile. This means that if something is mildly annoying to you but does not break one of the VM rules (posted below), you can soft-delete it so you don't have to look at it. However, please keep the following in mind:
-Do not delete any VMs to try to hide evidence of you/someone else breaking the rules. It won't work because mods can see deleted VMs (and undelete them), so we will find it anyway, and you may be punished more harshly for trying to hide things.
-Do not delete any VMs that were posted on your profile by a moderator. If we posted it there, it was there for a reason, and as said, we can undelete it anyway.
-You may delete extremely offensive messages and THEN tell a mod after if you wish. If someone posts porn or an extremely rude message on your profile you shouldn't have to look at it until a mod can get to it, and as said, we can still see the message when you "delete" it. Bear in mind that you won't have access to the report button on that message after you delete it, so you should either use the report button then delete, or delete and then PM a specific mod or 2 to take care of it.
VM RULESFirst and foremost, BE APPROPRIATE. There are children on this forum. This means no questionable RPing, conversations, or image macros/images. Your VMs are public to the entire staff so we can see any inappropriate content.
No spamming/flooding messages on other member’s profiles. This also goes for unsolicited messages.
There is zero tolerance for bullying or harassing other members, regardless of the situation. If a problem arises with another user, PM a moderator. If you get scammed, do not flood the other user’s wall with crude, and harassing language. Use the blacklist thread, and a moderator will mediate the situation.
Don’t be annoying. If a member doesn’t message you back right away, don’t spam them with “OMG WHY AREN’T YOU RESPONDING TO ME??”. That’s super obnoxious, and it won’t get you anywhere.
VMs are to be used to talk back and forth between you and another user. Misusing the system to spam, get around moderator decisions, or otherwise try to find loopholes will not be tolerated.
More may be added as needed. Feel free to PM a staff member if you have any questions about the rules or the system. You may also post here, but please only post constructive replies; no spamming.
