    My main concern is Houndoom since it is, by nature, a specialist that can't really go out of its range. I also don't have much of a defense against Water types. Suggestions?

    I question heavily the point of Rain Dance. Hypnosis is what you need.

    Shadow Ball works better than Aerial Ace, but I have a feeling that there's some strategy here I don't know about.

    You're on your own for deciding what, but I personally would've looked for a hit-and-run specialist like Electabuzz.
