Esara and the Man of Winter

Hello - yes, I'm doing another Eevee Trilogy story. ^^ This'll be the third one. The others are in the Completed Fics section - Umbreona and Joltarrow the Rogue Fighter(oneshot).
In this story, I made the narrator (an Espeon named Esara) have the personality in that, you can picture her with this expression -> ^^;;;
Anyway, hope you enjoy. ^^

Chap 1

I don’t exactly know where to start this story. All I can say is that this one winter really changed my life. I guess I should start at the beginning; maybe it’ll make more sense.
Well I guess it all started at the end of autumn, years ago when I was still an Eevee. I remember I had had so much fun that summer, playing with my friends. During that time, one by one, they all evolved. My good friend Flara evolved into a Flareon. Afterward, she’d always show off her fire moves and I’d be in awe of her natural skill. For a while I wanted to be a Flareon too.

“You always change your mind!” she said in her girlfriend voice that was so unique to her, “Just a few moons ago you wanted to be a Jolteon!”

I sweat dropped.

“Well, I just can’t make up my mind!” I said with a nervous smirk.

She’d then shake her head and giggle. She was never annoyed with me, and I guess that’s what I remember the most about her.
We were part of a group of Eevee families. We traveled together, hunted together, slept together, everything together. They were my family.
My mother was an Umbreon, and she was the leader of the pack. She’d always make sure we were doing what we were supposed to and keep together. But, that was a long time ago. She’s passed, and now my brother, Kane, leads. He’s a Jolteon, which is the reason I wanted to be one for the longest time. He made it look so glamorous.
Well, anyway, right at the end of that autumn, Kane told me that Mom always thought that I’d be an Espeon, so my choice changed again and stayed that way.
I remember them all standing on either side of this huge rock right at the river bank. It was a cool day and you could just feel winter making its approach. I walked down the aisle they had made for me. No one was an Eevee anymore, I was the last one to evolve. I felt kinda silly for that, so I didn’t look at them. I kept my big, brown eyes on the sandy ground as I made my way to the top of the rock.
The sun was high, the perfect time. I picked my head up and stared right into the sun. And the rest is history. I felt my body start to tingle - I knew I was evolving. I felt myself become larger, but more graceful and slender. When the tingling subsided, I whipped around and looked at the pack behind me. They cheered and smiled. Finally the last of us had evolved.

“You look so good, Esara!” Flara ran up to me as I stepped down from the rock.

“Th-Thank you!” I said with my nervous smile.

“Congrats,” I heard Kane’s voice, “But now it’s time we get a move on. We gotta beat winter. Don’t wanna be around here when it starts to snow.”

I smiled at him as he turned his back to start leading everyone to our winter spot. It was a couple hundred miles away, and we always migrated there for winter.
It was a warm spot – a forest by the beach. There we’d be able to catch ocean dwelling fish and Doduo – things we didn’t get here.
The leaves were turning all shades of brown, red and yellow. I don’t think we ever stayed long enough to see snow. We’d always make sure we left before that. I heard food was hard to get when the snow piled up. Stantler leave, birds migrate. The only ones that stay around are the fish in the lakes that don’t have a choice and some others that probably live single lives.
I followed Kane, right beside him as the rest started to follow as well, along the river. Flara was also right beside me. Things were just going so well and I felt so….oh, I don’t know, new in my newly evolved body. An Espeon was defiantly a good choice.

Kane interrupted my thoughts though, “When we get to the spot, I’ll teach you how to hunt. It’s too bad Mom’s not still around. I know you would’ve liked that better.”

“No, don’t say that!” I scolded nervously, “I’m sure you’ll do a good job! I trust ya! We’re siblings after all! If I can’t trust you, who can I trust to teach me?”

“Thanks, you always agree and never argue,” Kane pointed out.

“Just call it one of my ultimate skills!” I said with a wide smile that made him laugh.

Flara then jumped into the conversation, “Yeah, Esara, that’s what everyone likes about you.”

She always got involved with a conversation, but I couldn’t complain. If anyone was a good conversationalist, it was her without a doubt.

“What do you mean?” I asked curious.

Her statement was quite weird. I mean, sure - I was friends with everyone in the pack, but there were only about twenty of us. We weren’t all great friends, but we loved each other like family.

She started to whisper, “I’m talkin’ about Rumber. I think he got the hots for you.”

I rolled my eyes as she playfully pushed me.
Rumber was an Umbreon, and quite frankly, I don’t get relationships like that. How could I hook up with someone of my weakness type? In my opinion, relationships like that have built in time bombs should they go anywhere beyond friend.

“Nah!” I said loudly.

Rumber had a good sense of hearing, like most of us did. If I didn’t know any better, he could hear us and I wanted to make it clear I wasn’t interested.

“Oh, but why not?” Flara obviously didn’t agree with me on that subject.

“Because it doesn’t make any sense,” I said.

“Yeah, like love makes any sense to begin with,” she sneered.

“You guys are such girls,” Kane said suddenly and walked ahead, away from us.

I didn’t say anything to counter him; I waited for Flara to do it. She usually makes the better comments, but this time she didn’t say anything.
Now, it’s not as if being the leader, you can’t make fun of Kane or tell him that he’s wrong. He’s not the dictator of us. Now Mom, she was a dictator.
I put on my best smirk and narrowed my eyes as I closed in on Flara.

“If I didn’t know any better, I’d say you have a crush on my brother,” I teased.

“Sh-Shut up!” she wailed.

I giggled. I was sure if her face wasn’t naturally red it’d have been red.

“Next topic!” she ordered.

…

That night, we settled behind a few bushes next to the river we were following. I lied on my back and looked up at the sky. It was so peaceful and dark blue with stars that looked like little white specs thrown across it. The tree’s branches above covered it somewhat, but it was still pretty. I remember it was so quiet – every sound that was made almost got lost in the silence.
Suddenly, a whole flock of Taillow and Swellow flew quickly overhead. My face twisted in confusion. Something wasn’t right. Taillow and Swellow never fly at night, or at least, not that I had seen in my whole life, unless something was up. I leaned over to Kane and tapped him.

“Kane!” I shouted in a whisper, “Kane, wake up. Something isn’t right.”

Kane muffled, “Go back to bed, Esara.”

“No!” I whispered louder, “The birds are flying at night! Something’s wrong!”

He wouldn’t budge.
Just then, a loud bang not too far off sounded. The entire pack shot awake in alarm.
Kane was finally up.

“What the hell?” he shouted sleepily.

“I told you!” I cried.

“No time,” he said, “Let’s get a move on everybody.”

With his signal and lead, everyone got up and ran in the same direction as the Taillow had a few minutes ago. The Vaporeon in our group made their way to the river and we all decided we’d meet each other later. The rest of us ran into the brush where we were accompanied by other startled Pokemon.

“Where are we going? What’s going on?” I asked my brother as I ran along side him.

“Hunters! Didn’t you hear the bang?” Kane told me, annoyed, “It’s probably the last one of the season. We gotta get outta here.”

We ran and ran. I remember my paws started to hurt each time they hit the ground. I was getting tired.
We made it out of the woods and found ourselves in a large field. Usually the other side of the field is safe, but getting across it is treacherous. We didn’t stop to think, though, we just sprinted. Stantler, Scyther, Parasect, Pikachu, and other woodland Pokemon ran with us.
We began to break up as a group. It was every Pokemon for him or herself.

“Esara, no matter what, don’t worry about us!” I heard Kane shout, “Just get outta here!”

And then he was gone. I couldn’t hear him anymore over the pounding of hooves, paws, and feet.
I ran and ran, but I felt myself slowing down. It was too much. I found myself make it to the other end of the field, though.
I found a large, dark tree at the edge of the other forest. I decided hiding in a tree would be best, for I could not run another step.
I clawed onto the bark of the tree and climbed up onto a thick branch. I hauled myself onto that branch with the rest of my strength. I lied there, breathing hard with my eyes closed. I’d find Kane, Flara, and the others in the morning. I just wanted to rest.

“Hey!” I heard a bird Pokemon squawk.

I wearily lifted my deadweight head to look at him. It was a Spearow amongst many Spearow. The tree probably belonged to him.

“Get out of our tree! Go find your own!” he continued to squawk.

“Oh, please,” I begged, my eyes watering, “Please, Mr. Spearow, let me stay…just for tonight?”

He ruffled his feathers and didn’t answer, but he didn’t kick me out either. I put my head down again and fell asleep.
I’d find the rest of the pack tomorrow. Yeah, and then we’d continue our journey as planned. Of course, that’s not how the rest of the story goes at all.

Well, that's the first chapter. I should have chapter 2 out soon. Sorry it started out a little dull, but I promise it gets better. ^^;

w00ts! First review? This is an awesome start! I haven't read your other one, the Umbreona, but I'm definetly gonna be one of the closest readers for this one! Didn't see any mistakes, but it definetly was shorter then most of your chapters. Haven't updated your site yet either...

Well, make that two. I've read your Wyanaut rewrite, I've read your Contest Tie, and I've read your Treehouse Saga. From what I've read so far, you have a real talent for writting stories. I'm going to stick with this and see where you go.

Im sure this is an amazing start to an amazing fic! I didnt see any typos in your chapter. And I also think you did a much better than decent job of describing things. Keep it up!

I was sucked into the Fan Fiction once I started reading it Ama. Good description, lovely way of evolving Esara from an Eevee to an Espeon. Could you put me on the PM List?

This is realy good, encyclopika! I really enjoyed it, and I quite like the character of Esara.

Maybe it was a little predictable with the names being their chosen evolutions, but ahwell. Never mind. There was a little tense error, I'll put it below...
